Hollywood has long been a place where youth and beauty are currency. Yet, as the industry evolves, so do the narratives around aging, self-image, and authenticity. Actress and producer Laura Vale is at the forefront of this shift. With a career spanning decades and a new psychological thriller, Culprit, premiering on February 28th, Laura speaks candidly about the realities of aging in an industry that often prioritises appearance over depth.

“The pressures are different at different stages of life,” Laura reflects. “Wanting to look good on screen isn’t just a personal aspiration—it’s what society expects.” The entertainment world has historically sold dreams of perfection, offering audiences a chance to escape into a world of flawless faces and idyllic landscapes. “Hollywood often sells the dream,” she notes. “But there’s a shift happening. Audiences are becoming more engaged with raw, gritty characters—people with real depth and visible life experience.”

Laura’s journey in the industry has given her a unique perspective on self-image. “I started as a fitness model, and looking a certain way was part of the job,” she recalls. “I was confident then, but after taking a break from acting, seeing myself on an HD camera with harsh lighting was a shock. Suddenly, I had insecurities I never even considered before.”

What changed her perspective was the support of those around her. “My fiancé, who is also the writer-director of Culprit, told me, ‘No one cares about your arms. It’s about the character you’re portraying, the story you’re telling.’ That was a powerful moment. Surrounding ourselves with people who lift us up instead of tearing us down is crucial.”

The conversation about aging in Hollywood is more relevant than ever. Women in the industry are redefining beauty standards, embracing natural aging, and challenging the pressure to conform to unrealistic ideals. “We see European women like Brigitte Bardot and Helen Mirren aging unapologetically,” Laura says. “They exude confidence and sex appeal at any age. That’s inspiring.”

This shift isn’t just happening in Hollywood—it’s influencing young people navigating self-image in the social media age. “I see young women in their 20s and 30s struggling with insecurity, and I’m so grateful I don’t have to relive those years,” she admits. “Aging is inevitable. We either accept it or waste time fighting it.”

Laura’s background in psychology and mental health has deepened her understanding of these challenges. “I specialised in addiction and body image issues, working with young women struggling with self-esteem. Social media has intensified those pressures in ways we never experienced growing up. Now, we have a responsibility to promote healthier, more realistic ideals.”

Health and Wellbeing Trends

The health and wellbeing industry is constantly evolving, but at its core, it often feels like a reinvention of past trends. California, in particular, seems to be the birthplace of many fitness crazes before they spread worldwide. There’s always a new specialised studio—whether it’s boutique yoga, barre, or a fitness class hyper-focused on a single muscle group. But ultimately, a lot of it is just repackaging familiar concepts with a fresh marketing spin.

That said, the industry has made progress in understanding nutrition, hormonal health, and the importance of exercise tailored to different life stages. “My friend Tony Horton, the creator of P90X, has been pioneering workouts for healthy aging, focusing on flexibility, functional movement, and nutrition that supports hormonal balance. That’s the kind of shift I find really meaningful—understanding that fitness isn’t just about pushing limits but about longevity and sustainability.

I’ve personally experienced the reality of aging in fitness. I used to be a competitive athlete and could push my body to the extreme. But when I tried CrossFit in my 30s, I quickly realised that while my mind still thought I was 20, my body wasn’t on the same page. I got injured, which forced me to rethink my approach to fitness. Now, it’s about what works for me rather than following the latest trend.”

This shift in mindset is happening across the industry. Trainers who once built their careers in high-intensity fitness are now aging along with their clients and adapting their methods. The same goes for Hollywood—aging actors, particularly women, are redefining what it means to stay in the industry and remain visible. There’s more honesty now about how bodies change and how to work with that rather than against it.

Ultimately, it’s about self-acceptance. If you feel good in your body, that confidence radiates. Unfortunately, many people look for validation in all the wrong places—social media, unrealistic beauty standards, or comparisons to others. But true confidence comes from within, from surrounding yourself with people who give you realistic reflections of who you are.

Working with Clint Eastwood

“Looking back, working on a Clint Eastwood film so early in my career was a gift. At the time, I was just an extra, hoping to get my SAG card. But Clint noticed me and gave me a bigger opportunity, even though I was literally playing a dead body. He had this incredible ability to make everyone on set feel valued, no matter their role. There was no drama, no chaos—just a calm, professional environment where people were trusted to do their jobs.

That experience shaped how I approach my own productions. When I produce a film, I want that same energy on set—respect for everyone, no unnecessary egos. Rich and I have a simple rule: no *ssholes on set. When people feel supported and valued, they do their best work, and that energy translates to the final product.”

Future Aspirations

“Acting is my passion, and I plan to continue taking on complex roles, especially in the psychological thriller genre that Rich writes so well. Our next film, Seven Suspects, is currently in the casting phase, and we’re excited to keep growing, with bigger budgets and even more layered storytelling.

Beyond acting, I’ve started writing. I recently completed a dramedy script that I’d love to see come to life—whether through our production company or another avenue. I’m also working on a book aimed at young women, something I wish I could have read in my 20s. That period of life can be so overwhelming, and I want to offer a perspective that’s both honest and supportive. My niece, who’s 20, is contributing as well, adding her own experiences to make it even more relevant.

At the heart of it all, my goal is to create—whether through film, writing, or storytelling in other forms. I want to make work that resonates with people, moves them, and maybe even helps them see themselves a little differently. If I can do that, then I’m exactly where I need to be.”

As Laura steps into roles that demand raw vulnerability, she sees it as an opportunity to inspire others. “I’m drawn to complex, multi-layered characters. I want to tell stories that matter—stories that reflect real human experiences, flaws and all.”

Her production company, Good Rebel Pictures, is focused on crafting psychological thrillers that push boundaries. Culprit, her latest project, is a gripping exploration of the human psyche, proving that compelling storytelling transcends age and appearance.

“At the end of the day, people want to connect with real emotions, real struggles,” Laura concludes. “There will always be a place for glamour and escapism, but there’s also immense power in authenticity. And that’s what I hope to bring to the screen.”

Laura Vale’s Culprit premieres on February 28th on Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play, Fandango, VOD, and YouTube. With a cast including Jamie Donovan, Ron Orbach, Carolyn Mignini, and Michael Dempsey, and a screenplay by Rich Ronat and Jamie Donovan, it promises to be a thought-provoking thriller that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.

The Future of Spirituality: How Nazar Yasin is Merging Technology with Purpose https://wellbeingmagazine.com/the-future-of-spirituality-how-nazar-yasin-is-merging-technology-with-purpose/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-future-of-spirituality-how-nazar-yasin-is-merging-technology-with-purpose Wed, 05 Feb 2025 11:31:11 +0000 https://wellbeingmagazine.com/?p=109742 Technology is often blamed for increasing isolation and mental health struggles, however one entrepreneur believes it can be a force for good

The post The Future of Spirituality: How Nazar Yasin is Merging Technology with Purpose appeared first on Wellbeing Magazine.

Technology is often blamed for increasing isolation and mental health struggles, however one entrepreneur believes it can be a force for good—helping people find meaning, purpose, and connection. Nazar Yasin, founder of Sol, the leading mental and spiritual health app in the U.S., has embarked on a mission to bridge the gap between spirituality and technology, redefining how we nurture our inner lives in the digital age.

Nazar Yasin, founder of Sol

A Legacy of Purpose

For Nazar, the drive to make a meaningful impact is deeply personal and rooted in family history. His grandfather played a pivotal role in founding the modern state of Libya, fighting against Axis forces during World War II before becoming the country’s Minister of Defence. Growing up with this legacy, Nazar was instilled with a powerful sense of duty: to contribute to society in a meaningful way.

But his path to purpose was not without personal hardship. As a child, Nazar endured a traumatic experience that left him grappling with profound existential questions. “Why did this happen to me? Am I a bad person? Do I belong here?” These deeply personal inquiries led him toward a lifelong quest for meaning—a journey that would later inspire his revolutionary work in digital spirituality.

A Vision for Global Change

Nazar’s early career took him into the world of technology and investment. From working at Goldman Sachs to leading one of the first unicorn social networks outside the U.S., he was at the forefront of global innovation. His investments spanned across India, Africa, and Latin America, where he championed underrepresented founders and emerging tech markets. Yet, despite his success, a larger question loomed: What is all this innovation for, if people are still feeling lost, anxious, and disconnected?

Then came COVID-19—a moment of reckoning for humanity and for Nazar personally. The pandemic took the lives of loved ones, including his wife’s parents and a close friend. It also exacerbated a mental health crisis among entrepreneurs he mentored. As he received calls from struggling founders, isolated and battling depression, Nazar was compelled to dive deeper into understanding the root of modern suffering.

The Science of Spiritual Wellbeing

His research led him to a compelling discovery: While the world has focused on physical and mental health, the missing piece of the puzzle is spiritual wellbeing—a factor that directly impacts happiness, resilience, and even physical health. Studies from institutions like Harvard Medical School confirm that engaging in purposeful activities and fostering a sense of meaning can significantly reduce anxiety, depression, and addiction.

Nazar realised that the digital revolution could do more than connect people socially—it could help them reconnect spiritually. This realisation led to the birth of Sol, an app designed to help users cultivate purpose, engage in meaningful reflection, and connect with like-minded individuals on their spiritual journeys.

The Three Pillars of Purpose

Research shows that there are three key actions that can help individuals feel more purposeful:

 1. Understanding and Harnessing Your Strengths and Emotions – Taking time to meditate, journal, or reflect on personal strengths helps individuals build self-awareness and emotional clarity. Identifying what truly excites and motivates you is the first step toward finding purpose.
 2. Engaging in Community and Contributing to Others – Acts of kindness, authentic conversations, and supporting others help create a sense of belonging and meaning. Being part of a community fosters purpose and wellbeing.
 3. Connecting to Something Greater Than Yourself – Whether through nature, volunteering, or aligning with a larger mission, tapping into something beyond personal gain enhances spiritual fulfilment.

Interestingly, he believes that passion often follows purpose—not the other way around. By identifying strengths and aligning with meaningful work, passion emerges naturally. He acknowledges that not all passions can become careers, but purpose can be pursued in various ways beyond professional life.

The Growth of Sol and Its Transformative Impact

Sol has rapidly become a lifeline for those seeking deeper meaning in their lives. Guided by research from experts like Dr. Lisa Miller, founder of the Spirituality Mind Body Institute at Columbia University, the app integrates neuroscience-backed insights into an accessible and engaging platform. Dr. Miller, along with other luminaries in the field, has contributed valuable expertise to the development of Sol, ensuring it is both scientifically grounded and universally approachable.

In just a year, Sol has grown at an extraordinary pace, not just in user numbers but in profound impact. “From an entrepreneurial and venture capital perspective, it’s been one of those rocket ship stories,” Nazar shares. “But from a human and purpose-driven perspective, the feedback from our users has been incredible.”

People describe Sol as life-changing. Some users have even credited the app with saving them from despair, helping them rediscover a sense of purpose when they felt lost. Universities have also taken notice, with institutions eager to integrate Sol into student wellness programs. The urgency is clear—60% of students report feeling desperately alone, and 40% have experienced thoughts of suicide.

As a father of two teenagers, Nazar is acutely aware of the unique struggles young people face today. “It’s really hard being a young person these days,” he says. “Our brains are overwhelmed with anxiety-inducing information—from global conflicts to fears about AI and climate catastrophe—all amplified by social media. And at the same time, we’re less equipped to handle this anxiety because traditional community safety nets have eroded.”

People are more disconnected than ever, living far from family and childhood friends, working remotely, and engaging primarily through screens. The loss of in-person connections and organic social support has left many struggling to cope.

The Redefinition of Spirituality

Amidst this disconnection, there is a renewed hunger for meaning. People may be moving away from organised religion, but they are seeking new ways to explore spirituality. Nazar understands this deeply. “It’s a story I’ve lived, and I hear it from so many others,” he says.

Yet, spirituality remains a misunderstood concept. “When people hear ‘spirituality,’ their minds often go in one of two directions: either it’s ‘woo-woo New Age’ stuff, or it’s something dark and mystical,” he explains. “But it’s neither of those things.”

To clarify, Nazar offers a powerful analogy: Spirituality is to religion what exercise is to sport.

“What do you call an activity that improves your physical fitness? Exercise. You can do it at home, alone or with others, and there are no strict rules,” he says. “If you organise that exercise into structured activities with rules, goals, and teams, it becomes a sport.”

Likewise, spirituality is simply the practice of strengthening one’s sense of purpose and connection. It can take many forms—meditation, affirmations, nature walks, or personal reflection—without needing to follow a prescribed set of beliefs. Religion, on the other hand, is a structured, communal expression of spirituality, much like how sports are organised forms of exercise.

A New Dawn for Spirituality

Nazar’s work represents a paradigm shift in how we approach mental and emotional wellbeing. Rather than seeing technology as a distraction from our inner lives, he envisions it as a tool that can guide us toward deeper self-awareness and fulfilment. His mission with Sol is to create a digital sanctuary—a space where people can engage in spiritual exploration without barriers of geography, background, or religious affiliation.

As society stands at the crossroads of rapid technological change and a deep yearning for meaning, Sol offers a hopeful vision: one where the digital world does not pull us away from ourselves, but rather helps us find our way back. Nazar Yasin’s journey—from personal adversity to pioneering a new frontier in wellbeing—shows us the power of purpose. In merging spirituality with technology, he reminds us that, even in the most advanced era of human history, our deepest need remains unchanged: to understand who we are and why we are here.

The post A Young Romanian Leader in Promoting Art and Culture: Claudiu Dumitrache appeared first on Wellbeing Magazine.

]]>
In the European cultural landscape, one Romanian artist stands out, seamlessly blending modernity with tradition and earning admiration on a global scale. Claudiu Dumitrache began his musical career at the age of 12, performing over 3,000 shows. Now, at just 25, he is the most prolific young Romanian writer, with nine published books to his name.

One of the defining aspects of Dumitrache’s artistic and literary work is his dedication to promoting Orthodox Christianity, a faith to which King Charles himself has shown a growing affinity in recent years. Through his cultural initiatives, Dumitrache bridges Romania’s rich spiritual traditions with the modern world, ensuring that the timeless values of faith, identity, and heritage remain at the heart of artistic expression.

Hailed as “a true star of European culture” in California, Dumitrache has dedicated his life to art and has been working since a young age, striving to bring joy to people’s hearts. His travels through the United States, Europe and Asia have broadened his worldview, making him a strong advocate of universal values. In recognition of his cultural contributions, he was named Ambassador of Culture by the Euro Education Federation in Europe and European Artist of the Month in Beverly Hills in August 2024.

At the beginning of his musical career, Mihai Claudiu Dumitrache was mentored by Miley Cyrus, who taught him to perform “The Climb” in 2012. The song earned him his first accolades, and he later shared with Beverly Hills Magazine that his memories of Miley remain among the most cherished of his life.

Dumitrache’s innovative literary contribution

Magazines in Chicago and California have highlighted that he is an artist with a unique personality, one of the few young people promoting Eastern culture in his books and work. Regarding Claudiu Dumitrache’s poetry, Jonathan Jackson wrote that “the personal nature of these poems allows them to rise to the universal in their honesty and longing. Art is a meta-language, as the filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky has said. Claudiu Dumitraches’ poetry enters into this “meta-language” and invites the heart to contemplate life on the most essential levels. Here, is a powerful of example of what St. Porphyrios meant when he said, “Whoever wants to become a Christian, must first become a poet.” Poetry is the land of paradox and experience – this is the archetypal landscape of the Eternal Word.

With an erudite yet accessible writing style, Dumitrache masterfully combines philosophical depth with poetic sensitivity. One of his books, “Albert Einstein și dorul firesc de Ortodoxie”, a premium book designated by the Romanian Broadcasting Society, explores Einstein’s spirituality and the significant role of Orthodox Christianity in society. Once a follower of the New Age movement, Claudiu Dumitrache now seeks to educate young people about its potential pitfalls. Like Jonathan Jackson, he advocates Orthodoxy as a path to both personal and communal fulfilment.

For his literary contributions and philosophical vision, Claudiu Dumitrache is regarded as the legacy or message of Mihai Eminescu in contemporary times. According to Hollywood Progressive, Claudiu’s admiration for Mihai Eminescu led him to write a long poem dedicated to Romania’s national poet – an Orthodox akathist appreciated in academic circles. Historian Ioan-Aurel Pop, an academician and president of the Romanian Academy, described Claudiu as “a profound connoisseur of Orthodox theology, a poet endowed with the sensitivity of a poet, and an admirer and refiner of Eminescu’s work.” Furthermore, he hailed Claudiu Dumitrache as “a symbol for the future of intellectual creation,” as well as “an intellectual capable of uniting souls” and an artist “who will carry the arts forward.”

Claudiu Dumitrache’s remarkable achievements include being recognised in Romania’s Book of Records for publishing his autobiography at the age of just 20. He was also awarded the Romanian Professional Journalists’ Union Prize, becoming the youngest laureate in the history of Romanian press. His literary and journalistic excellence has earned him further accolades, including honours from Literatura și Arta, one of Moldova’s most prestigious publications, which named him “a notable personality in culture and public life”.

A revelation from Wallachia

The renowned historian Pop further praised Dumitrache as “a bearer and creator of culture, rare to find today in Wallachia.” A journalist from New York echoed this sentiment, calling him “a revelation from Wallachia.” British composer Michael James Down stated that he always knew that “Claudiu Dumitrache has a fantastic voice and the right charisma to be an international artist.” Down discovered that “Claudiu’s way of working is unlike anyone else’s” and that he is “the type of person who makes things happen!

Several media outlets have also highlighted his connections with notable figures such as businessman Michael Koch (a Forbes Council member), businesswoman Cheryl Shuman, Marian Gold from Alphaville, Jakob Petren, and Michaela Rose from Arabesque. The latter also expressed her admiration for the Romanian artist’s personality. The famous singer of the hit “Midnight Dancer,” who continues to perform with the band Arabesque, remarked that Claudiu is “a very spiritual person” and possesses “a very sensitive and romantic voice.” Isaac C. Cates (from the Grammy Awards committee) and Andrei Zincă are also notable figures who have commented on Claudiu Dumitrache’s artistic complexity.

According to Beverly Hills Magazine, Dumitrache has been nominated for a music award in Las Vegas in recent years, and on this occasion, actor Michael Airington said that one of the things that impresses him about Claudiu is his drive and determination. “Not only is he an incredibly talented singer and performer, but his drive and perseverance are what it takes to be successful in life. I can say, Claudiu is the real deal.” – Michael Airington

The leader of prestigious and innovative projects in Romanian culture

In Romania, the country where King Charles has professed to feelat home and which he has described as “the land of glory, the land of longing” (quoting the national poet Mihai Eminescu), Claudiu Dumitrache is the founder of Myosotis Media Group, an organisation dedicated to promoting excellence in the arts, sciences, sports, and business. As President of the Certification Commission for Quality, Performance, and Excellence within the Myosotis Awards, he has played a key role in recognising outstanding contributions across multiple fields. At the 2024 Contemporary Values ceremony, Patriarch Daniel of Romania personally congratulated Dumitrache for his promotion of Christian cultural and spiritual values.

Initially presented at the prestigious Radar de Media Galas, which Dumitrache co-organised alongside producer Raluca Găină, the awards are now a highlight of the Contemporary Values Gala. Under the patronage of Romania’s Ministry of Culture, these projects bring together leading figures from academia in both Romania and the Republic of Moldova, further cementing their impact on the region’s intellectual and artistic landscape. With its growing reputation, the Myosotis Awards have become Romania’s most significant independent honours, often compared to the Oscars and Grammys for their influence and prestige in Romania.

In a world where we are gradually losing our sense of identity, organising an event of this kind – one that promotes culture, national identity, history, and art, and opens with the National Anthem – is not only an exceptionally significant occasion but should also set the standard for all similar events in the future,” declared journalist George Grigoriu at the Myosotis Awards 2024.

Dumitrache is also the organizer of festivals such as the National Science and Art Festival “Basarab Fest” and the founder of the Royal Literary Magazine Awards. According to MSN, Deadline and soapsindepth.com, this award was given to Jonathan Jackson in 2022, for his “contribution to the understanding of authentic art, for literary works written with inspiration and talent, for highlighting the values of Eastern culture.”

Rise as a hope

Claudiu Dumitrache has been named among Romania’s top five exceptional young talents, joining an elite group that includes Olympic swimmer David Popovici, ballerina Francesca Velicu (of the English National Ballet), countertenor Alexandru Costea, and footballer Radu Drăgușin (of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club). Ema Tănase from the Matricea Românească Association highlighted the significance of their achievements, emphasising that “they play a key role in shifting perceptions within Romania and demonstrating that the country can compete at the highest global level.”

Through his visionary leadership, Claudiu Dumitrache continues to shape the future of Romanian culture on an international scale. William P. Barret declared in a Chicago magazine that “we are dealing with a remarkable artist who seems to rise as a hope in a country that still faces corruptionand where European values are difficult to integrate.”

Through his work with young artists in Romania, Claudiu Dumitrache has become a beacon of inspiration, encouraging the new generation to embrace their cultural heritage while striving for global recognition, all while preserving the spiritual foundations of Christianity.

Claudiu’s work extends beyond artistic expression, advocating a philosophy of unity and peace that deeply resonates with his audiences. His message inspires individuals to reflect on their own spiritual journeys and to embrace the cultural diversity that enriches the world. For his efforts in promoting peace, he was honoured as an Ambassador of Peace by the World Literary Forum for Peace and Human Rights in India.

In addition to his artistic endeavours, Claudiu is actively engaged in charitable work, supporting various causes that seek to improve access to education and foster cultural exchange, in his role as a Cultural Ambassador of the Euro Education Federation. His commitment to making a meaningful impact on the world exemplifies the core values of his artistic vision. As an affiliated member of the Centre for Philosophical Practices, Philosophical Consultancy, and Counselling within the Academic Society for the Research of Religions and Ideologies, he delivers lectures to help students understand the connection between science and faith, the role of art, and the importance of prayer in life.

Andrea Laing is no stranger to captivating audiences. Known for her dynamic roles in hit projects like Pain Hustlers (alongside Emily Blunt and Chris Evans) and her comedic chops as Zoe in Adult Swim’s Yule Log: Branchin’ Out, Andrea effortlessly blends sharp wit with heartfelt storytelling. Her latest adventure, reprising her role in the Yule Log franchise, premiered on HBO Max on December 7th, just in time to bring a dose of humor and thrills to your holiday season.

But Andrea’s story extends beyond the screen. From her passion for fitness to her globe-trotting adventures, she’s a force of inspiration for anyone striving to balance creativity, health, and personal growth. In this exclusive interview with Wellbeing Magazine, Andrea shares her secrets to staying fit, focused, and joyful amidst the demands of a vibrant career.

Keeping Fit: The Foundation of Stamina and Creativity

Q: Filming such a high-energy, comedic role like Zoe in Yule Log 2: Branchin’ Out must require a lot of stamina! How do you prepare physically and mentally for demanding projects like this?
Andrea: There’s a fair amount of back prepping especially with shooting out of sequence. I need to be aware of how my character (Zoe) is mentally or physically affected in any given scene. Another aspect to filming horror projects is overnight shoots, so I try to reintegrate my internal clock with pockets of exercise and rest when I see fit. Staying fueled is critical when working long hours. I always make sure to have healthy snacks on hand along with plenty of water to keep hydrated. Ultimately, maintaining a playful, positive attitude and trusting the process is what helps me thrive in these roles, ensuring that I can keep up the energy and creativity needed on set!

Q: Your fitness routine includes hot yoga, HIIT, and Pilates. How do these practices support your craft?
Andrea: It’s all about making the most of the time you have, staying consistent, and integrating movement into daily life. By using time-efficient workouts, making fitness a priority, and staying flexible, you can maintain your fitness and well-being without feeling overwhelmed. Carbs tend to make me sluggish so I try to intake more fruits and veggies with a fair amount of hydration. Calisthenics is also great on the go especially if you don’t have access to a gym. The key is consistency, not perfection. You don’t need to have an hour long gym session every day. A quick 20–30 minutes of movement several times a week will keep you on track, even when life gets busy. Aim for small, achievable fitness goals that fit into your schedule.

Mental Wellness: Finding Balance in Chaos

Q: Mental wellness is essential in your line of work. How do you recharge emotionally and mentally?
Andrea: I find pockets of stillness. Whether that’s mediation, going for a walk, surrounding myself with nature or journaling. In this digital era, I find it helpful to put away electronics frequently. I also try to engage in some form of exercise to clear my mind and I also find that taking a bath, reading a book, listening to a podcast or simply playing some calming music helps me to reset and recharge.

Q: Travel seems to play a big role in your mental health. Can you share a recent experience that left a lasting impact?
Andrea: I recently had the opportunity to travel to Lottum, in the Limburg province of the Netherlands. I engaged in apple picking on a beautiful bed and breakfast that sits on the Maas river. I was breaking bread with the locals and living a slower paced rural lifestyle and just engaging in deep and meaningful conversations. These little moments are just so special and unique. Although I am not able to speak the language fluently (yet) there’s always a common thread of love and acceptance and wanting to understand each other better and that is truly beautiful.

Finding Humor in Life’s Challenges

Q: Comedy often helps us process life’s ups and downs. Has humor been therapeutic for you?
Andrea: Absolutely! Laughter is a natural stress reliever. Humor has always been a powerful tool for processing life’s challenges, and I truly believe there’s a therapeutic side to making others laugh. Comedy helps us navigate difficult situations, cope with stress, and build resilience in ways that few other tools can.

Cultural Roots: Lessons from Jamaica and North Carolina

Q: Growing up between Jamaica and North Carolina must have been unique. How did these environments influence your approach to self-care?
Andrea: It is definitely a unique paradox, given the stark contrasts between the two places in terms of culture, pace of life, geography, and values. The focus on gratitude from Jamaica and the emphasis on personal growth from the U.S. both feed into my practice of humility. It involves being grateful for the opportunities, people, and experiences that have shaped me, while also being open to learning and evolving. Self-care for me is about balance—nurturing the body, mind, and spirit in a way that feels authentic to who I am, whether I’m on an island or living that Southern city life. I am grateful to have a fun blend of Caribbean warmth and community with the slower-paced American South.

Q: Any wellness traditions from your Jamaican roots that you still practice today?
Andrea: I wasn’t raised in a very carb heavy environment. My parents were always big on fruits and vegetables. I rarely even drink coffee! I sip herbal tea as a great substitute and limit my sugar intake. Traditional Jamaican meals are often smaller in portion compared to some Western diets. The practice of eating foods in balance, with a focus on local and natural ingredients, encourages mindful eating. Herbs and spices, such as ginger, garlic, turmeric, and scallion, which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that support immune health are a typical staple in Jamaican culture! I always turn to ginger as my go-to home remedy to combat any potential issues

Travel and Wellness: Tips for the Globetrotting Soul

Q: You’ve traveled extensively thanks to your Delta Airlines campaign. How do you stay well while exploring the world?
Andrea: It’s all about finding a balance. Don’t deny yourself the simple pleasures of trying the native food, but also consider packing light snacks to keep your energy up. Be sure to decompress, but also explore and get some exercise! You can embrace your destination on foot or by bike to stay active while enjoying the sights. Socializing with locals or fellow travelers can also help you feel more engaged and connected to a more immersive experience. Traveling, especially to unfamiliar places, can bring up emotions like homesickness, culture shock, or even anxiety. Be gentle with yourself if you feel overwhelmed

Q: What’s one wellness item or ritual you never travel without?
Andrea: With an irregular schedule due to travel, I try to never leave home without my chapstick AND my gratitude journal. It helps me stay focused on the positives of each unique experience, such as new adventures or restaurants, interesting encounters, or beautiful landscapes. Chapstick is crucial to my comfort level. Award-Winning Chef Andy Beynon triumphs through turbulent times to secure Coveted Michelin Star

Renowned London-based chef Andy Beynon has defied the odds and achieved culinary greatness amidst unprecedented challenges, all while embodying the ethos of giving back to the community.

In an exclusive interview on The Health Lottery’s Paying it Forward podcast episode which airs Thursday 9th January, Beynon revealed the remarkable journey of his restaurant, navigating through the tumultuous landscape of lockdowns to clinch a prestigious Michelin star within just 20 days of opening.

Beynon’s Behind restaurant, nestled between lockdowns one and two, faced a daunting reality as the hospitality industry grappled with uncertainty. Despite the odds stacked against him, Beynon and his team embarked on their culinary venture, trading for a mere 20 days before succumbing to lockdown restrictions once more.

Reflecting on this tumultuous period, Beynon shared, “It was a bit of a crazy time. We opened, traded for 10 days, went into lockdown two, opened for 10 more days, and then faced the announcement of yet another closure. It was a rollercoaster of uncertainty.”

Surviving in such precarious circumstances was no small feat, especially for a new establishment. Beynon recounted the challenges of securing financial support and navigating the complexities of operating a restaurant amid ongoing restrictions. “We really struggled… It was super tricky through that point,” he admitted.

Yet, amidst the trials and tribulations, Beynon’s dedication and culinary prowess shone through. Within the brief window of operation, his restaurant garnered the prestigious Michelin star, propelling Beynon into the spotlight of gastronomic excellence.

“It was one of my dreams to achieve a Michelin star, and to see it happen so quickly was surreal,” Beynon remarked, reflecting on the momentous achievement.

Central to Beynon’s success was his unwavering passion for food and relentless pursuit of culinary excellence. With over 17 years of experience in the industry, Beynon’s journey has been characterised by a deep-rooted love for diverse cuisines and a commitment to mastering his craft.

In addition to his culinary achievements, Beynon has also made significant contributions to the community through his philanthropic endeavours.

Beynon’s dedication to philanthropy is deeply rooted in his own experiences, including a poignant moment early in his career when a fellow chef paid it forward to him. “I used to work with a chef called Matt Weeden, who had a Michelin Star restaurant back when I was a little kid,” Beynon recalled. “Despite having no money to my name, he would take me out to two-star restaurants in London and always foot the bill. That memory has stayed with me and fuelled my desire to give back.”

Inspired by the concept of paying it forward, Beynon collaborates with local charities to raise funds for those in need.

“I work with a local charity or a local food bank in Hackney, where I gift a table to be bid for at an auction, raising a decent amount of money,” Beynon shared. “It’s super important to work with food banks, especially since I’m in the food industry. Giving back in this way is essential.”

Looking to the future, Beynon remains committed to his culinary journey and his mission to make a positive impact on the world. As he continues to innovate and inspire, Beynon’s story serves as a testament to the transformative power of resilience, creativity, and generosity.

Lord Peter Hain’s remarkable journey and ongoing advocacy highlighted in The Health Lottery’s Paying it Forward podcast hosted by Danni Menzies.

The latest episode of the Health Lottery’s podcast series dropping at 7am on Boxing Day features an insightful conversation with Lord Peter Hain, shedding light on his remarkable journey as an activist, author and politician, and his ongoing advocacy for social justice and humanitarian causes.

London-based Lord Hain, a former anti-apartheid activist and Member of Parliament for over a quarter of a century, shared pivotal moments from his life, including his courageous campaign to end apartheid-era sports tours to Britain in the 1970s. His pioneering efforts, which included disrupting cricket and rugby matches involving white South African teams, played a significant role in raising awareness about the injustices of apartheid.

Reflecting on his activism during apartheid, Lord Hain stated, “It’s no good just holding up a banner outside the stadium. Let’s go and do something. We did something, and we stopped those tours.”

Lord Hain’s advocacy extended beyond apartheid-era activism, as he continued to champion causes aimed at addressing social inequalities and injustices. He recounted his success in advocating for pension support for individuals severely injured during the troubled times in Northern Ireland, highlighting the power of legislative action in effecting positive change.

In addition to his political endeavours, Lord Hain discussed his many literary contributions, particularly his bestselling thriller novels, including The Lion Conspiracy, The Elephant Conspiracy and The Rhino Conspiracy. Through his writing, Lord Hain raises awareness about pressing issues such as wildlife conservation and the illicit trade in endangered species.

Commenting on his novels, Lord Hain remarked, “A thriller is meant to be a page-turner that just wants to take you there. You get attracted to the characters, but at the end, there’s some grisly scenes, which are taken from real life.”

Lord Hain’s commitment to making a difference resonates beyond the political arena, as he encourages individuals to take action in their daily lives. From standing up against bullies to advocating for the marginalised, Lord Hain emphasises the importance of collective action in fostering positive change.

Listeners can tune in to Lord Hain’s inspiring conversation on the Health Lottery’s podcast, Paying It Forward, available on all major podcast platforms. His latest book, The Lion Conspiracy has just been published by Muswell Press.

Helen Fields, a million-selling crime thriller author and former criminal barrister, embodies the transformative journey from a high-stakes legal career to a creatively fulfilling life. Her life at the Bar was intense and harrowing, marked by long hours, complex cases, and the immense emotional weight of witnessing human tragedy. Today, as a renowned author, Fields channels her experiences into storytelling, offering insights on healing, growth, and paying it forward in ways that inspire those around her.

In a recent interview for our magazine, Fields shared her hard-won wisdom about transitioning from law to literature, healing from professional burnout, and cultivating mental wellbeing. Her reflections provide invaluable guidance to anyone striving for balance, fulfilment, and personal transformation.

The Journey from Courtroom to Creative Life

Fields’ experience as a criminal barrister provided a unique foundation for her later career as a crime novelist. In the courtroom, she was constantly confronted with the darkest aspects of human nature and the justice system. “You’re not prepared for the toll it takes,” she recalls, “dealing with genuinely horrific cases and absorbing people’s pain day after day. I didn’t see the toll at first—it was my husband who eventually pointed it out. I was emotionally unavailable, a ‘shadow of myself.’”

As a barrister, she became accustomed to putting her emotions aside. The legal field, especially criminal law, demands toughness, mental resilience, and sometimes emotional detachment. Fields explains, “It’s not a career where you’re offered much support. There’s an assumption that you’re ‘superhuman’ and that the cases won’t affect you, but they do.”

Lessons on Self-Awareness and Balance

For Fields, the demands of her career began clashing with her personal life after the birth of her children. Despite her love for the courtroom, she realised that her work was taking too much out of her emotionally and physically. This realisation led to her first pivotal decision: leaving the Bar to work with her husband’s media company. She found that her legal skills transferred seamlessly, giving her confidence in a new domain while allowing more time for family.

This step back opened space for self-reflection. Fields stresses the importance of taking stock of your mental wellbeing, especially in high-stress careers. “So much of myself was wrapped up in work and achievement, but when I stopped, I had to re-evaluate what truly made me happy,” she says. Writing was a way to rediscover that happiness. She describes her early novels as “other people’s yoga,” a personal escape and a way to reconnect with her creative side.

Writing as Therapy and Transformation

Writing became not only a career but also a therapeutic outlet. Through writing, she channeled years of suppressed emotions and unresolved anger. While she did not draw directly from specific cases, she infused her characters with the “sense of frustration” she experienced from the systemic issues she encountered in law. “Writing let me express and explore these feelings constructively, and it was deeply healing,” she explains.

Fields encourages others to find their own “therapeutic practices.” Whether it’s journaling, creating art, or something physical, having an activity that allows self-expression can be a lifeline. “Do something you enjoy, not because it has to lead anywhere but because it fulfils you,” she advises. For Fields, the unexpected success of her novels was a bonus; her initial goal was simply to reconnect with her joy in storytelling.

Finding Healing through Physical and Emotional Resilience

Beyond writing, Fields discovered the value of physical strength and resilience. After leaving the Bar, she took up karate at age forty, a move that surprised her. “I’d never done anything like that before,” she laughs. “But karate taught me to stand firm and absorb a hit—both literally and figuratively. There’s something incredibly therapeutic about physical endurance and knowing that you can handle it.”

This sense of resilience became even more pronounced when her children inspired her to try other activities, like wind tunnel flying. “Learning to control your body and just letting go in the wind tunnel was a different kind of freedom,” she says. “Physical activities force you to focus, which can be incredibly grounding.”

The Power of Nature as Therapy

Relocating to California for several years also allowed Fields to reconnect with nature in profound ways. Fields describes her solitary walks along the Californian coast as deeply healing. “Walking on a beach, hearing nothing but the waves, feeling the sun rising—that brought me peace like nothing else,” she shares. Today, she emphasises nature as a “cheap, accessible therapy,” especially for busy people who may not have time for lengthy self-care routines.

“Even now, back in the UK, walking with my kids is one of the best ways to connect. Nature has a way of opening people up. I find that if you walk with them, they’ll talk about things they wouldn’t at home.”

Paying It Forward: Advocating for Well-Being and the Arts

Today, Fields advocates for the criminal bar community, junior barristers, and writers alike, reminding them of the importance of support and balance. She is an active member of the Society of Authors, a union representing over 12,500 self-employed professionals in the creative arts, including writers, translators, and graphic artists. The organisation provides invaluable resources for those working in often financially precarious and isolated roles.

“It’s essential in any industry, but especially in the arts, to turn around and extend a hand to those behind you on the ladder,” Fields emphasises. She describes the Society of Authors as “a community, a support network, and a safety net” for professionals facing challenges such as contract disputes, financial hardship, or disability.

Her advice is straightforward: “If you’ve managed to build a career, look around and offer support to someone who might be struggling. For me, it’s about making sure artists and creators have the resources they need. I love being a part of it because I’ve been on both sides of that need.”

Tips for Embracing Passion, Finding Balance, and Letting Go of Self-Doubt

Throughout her journey, Fields has developed a set of guiding principles for those considering a career change or looking to follow their passion:

 1. Reclaim Your Joy: “Do things that bring you happiness, even if they don’t have a clear ‘goal’ attached,” she says. Fields’ journey into writing was driven by a love for storytelling, not by ambition or a need for external validation. Following what truly excites you, she suggests, can lead to unexpected fulfilment.
 2. Nurture Your Resilience: Fields underscores the value of finding ways to boost both mental and physical resilience. Whether it’s karate or flying in a wind tunnel, physical activities that challenge you can foster a sense of control, grounding, and confidence.
 3. Engage with Nature: The natural world has restorative powers that shouldn’t be overlooked. Fields encourages finding time for walks, beach visits, or even a moment of stillness outside. “Nature has a way of putting things into perspective,” she says.
 4. Seek Community and Support: Community, especially in solitary professions, is crucial. “Find your tribe,” Fields suggests. Whether it’s a writing group, a book club, or an online forum, having people who share your interests and challenges makes a huge difference.
 5. Pay It Forward: For Fields, giving back is essential. “Mentorship, advice, or even a little encouragement can change someone’s life,” she notes. In creative industries, where many people work alone or are self-employed, Fields believes that building a supportive network is key to survival.

Helen Fields’ journey is one of resilience, transformation, and a profound commitment to wellbeing. Her story demonstrates that it’s possible to turn professional struggles into personal growth, and that by following our passions, we can find joy and purpose in unexpected places. As Fields navigates life as an author, a mentor, and an advocate, she reminds us that healing and happiness lie not in escaping the past but in learning from it and giving back. Whether in the courtroom, on the page, or in nature, Fields shows us that a life of fulfilment is one where we continuously seek to uplift ourselves and those around us.
