This summer, the Weston-super-Mare area is welcoming a new mobile dental unit nicknamed “Lottie” proudly funded by The Health Lottery, with a mission to provide essential dental care to those experiencing homelessness and social exclusion. This initiative, led by Dentaid the Dental Charity, addresses the critical oral health needs of some of the most vulnerable populations, including abuse survivors, cancer patients, fishing communities, families living in poverty, and those battling addiction.

On August 22nd, the Weston mobile dental unit will host the third of three Health Lottery-funded clinics, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to bring dental care to those in need. Over the first two clinics in Weston, 19 patients received 77 treatments, including extractions and fillings for individuals suffering from dental pain, and scale and polish services to help boost their confidence. Additionally, patients received oral health education, oral cancer screenings, and guidance to help them reconnect with healthcare and support services. The upcoming clinic is expected to be just as busy, continuing to serve those overcoming substance misuse and homelessness.

The need for this service is undeniable. Research shows that 70% of individuals experiencing homelessness suffer from toothache, with 15% resorting to extracting their own teeth due to lack of access to dental care. The daily challenges faced by those sleeping rough or living in insecure housing make maintaining oral health extremely difficult.

The Health Lottery has raised over £132 million to support health and wellbeing initiatives across Great Britain, and this project in Weston is a prime example of their commitment to making a difference. Carly Troullis of The Health Lottery expressed, “We are proud to support Dentaid in bringing much-needed dental care to those who need it most. This initiative is about more than just alleviating pain; it’s about restoring dignity and offering hope to people who often feel forgotten. The Health Lottery is dedicated to improving health and wellbeing across Great Britain, and this project exemplifies our mission.”

The funding from The Health Lottery has been crucial in refurbishing, stocking, and preparing Dentaid’s new mobile unit. Staffed by volunteer dentists and dental nurses, these mobile units provide a range of services, including oral cancer screenings, dental health advice, cleanings, fillings, and extractions.

Jill Harding, Communications Manager at Dentaid, emphasised the broader impact of their work: “We’re incredibly grateful to The Health Lottery for this essential support. Dental issues can be a significant barrier for those trying to escape poverty and addiction. Our mobile units are not just about treating oral health; they’re about breaking down barriers to care. By visiting soup kitchens, hostels, and emergency accommodations, we aim to provide regular, accessible services to those who might otherwise go without.”

Due to the increasing demand for Dentaid’s services, the charity has expanded its fleet of mobile dental units. This year, Dentaid plans to conduct nearly 1,000 charity dental clinics across the UK, a substantial increase from 422 clinics last year.

The patients supported by this charity face numerous challenges, including homelessness, anxiety, and limited opportunities to prioritise oral health. Many have endured dental damage due to poor diet, addiction, violence, or abuse. Through consistent and compassionate care, Dentaid, with the support of The Health Lottery, aims to improve their patients’ overall wellbeing and help them on their journey to a better life.

Wellbeing Day a Great Success!

Lushington Chiropractic’s Wellbeing Day on 26th April was a great success with visitors of all ages, and raised over £100 for Dr Barnardo’s Children’s Charity. Their Guest of Honour was Dr Jonathan Andrews MB BS BSc (Hons) DCH DRCOG DFFP MRCGP, from Princes Park Health Centre. As well as cutting the clinic’s 12th Birthday Cake, he enjoyed the day and got his posture checked whilst he was there!

The Wellbeing Day included a range of talks from Lushington practitioners, with lots of self-help advice and tips. They also offered free posture assessments on the day with chiropractic advice and help. The Acupuncturists, Dr Carolyn Rubens (GP & Medical Acupuncturist) and Robert Bowley (Chinese Acupuncturist) were busy on the day explaining about how the two forms of acupuncture work.

All the practitioners kindly donated their time for free to help raise money for Dr Barnardo’s Children’s Charity. The most popular treatments were the massage tasters.

Lushington Chiropractic is an award-winning chiropractic and health clinic in Eastbourne town centre. Find out more about Lushington’s charity events.

The Human Touch therapists are bringing mini holistic treatments to local festivals and charity fun days. They recently spent the day delivering six mini treatments at the Beach Dreams festival. They’re looking forward to working at the Wish Park Festival, Hove, on 11th July, and also providing mini treatments on 9th August to help raise funds for Wilsons Wonky Wish at the Lamb Park, Pond Lane, Durrington.

The Human Touch team offer a vital service at their weekly clinic, aiming to bring a choice of thirty-minute and one hour sessions of up to fourteen different affordable complementary therapies to local people in Shoreham by Sea.

The idea for the Human Touch was originally born many years ago when the project leader, Mary, was unable to afford complementary therapies. She went to college to learn reflexology and received treatments as part of the course. Her health and wellbeing benefited immediately. She realised that there were then, and still are now so many people in local communities who, because of their financial and other life circumstances, would normally view complementary therapies as a luxury. So she made the decision to always make inclusive space within her therapy practice. The Human Touch Project is an extension of that original idea. The project opened its doors for the first time in February 2014. Since then to the present day The Human Touch practitioners have been providing a wide variety of Affordable Therapies for All. If you’d like to help them continue this valuable service, please visit crowdfunder
