Having enjoyed a complimentary Biodynamic Medicine session two years ago with Mary Molloy at the Lewes Wellbeing and Happiness Show, I was delighted when I was invited again – this time to experience a longer session with Corinna Kitchen; timely to mark Corinna’s new Biodynamic Wellbeing practice at Equilibrium in Lewes.

Although I found it difficult to describe the experience of two years ago, I do remember it being profoundly relaxing and blissful. Needless to say, with the half-day treatment being offered to me this time, I jumped at the chance!

Corinna warmly welcomed me when I arrived for my treatment, and after I’d completed the necessary client information paperwork, we chatted about what I would like to achieve from the session. I didn’t have any presenting problems that I was aware of, other than feeling a bit frazzled, so I suggested that perhaps I might need a bit of ‘relax and retune’. As I understand it, Biodynamic Wellbeing works on the subconscious level, as well as physical and emotional, so I asked that perhaps the intention of this treatment would also be to release anything unhelpful to my wellbeing that I may be unaware of.

After settling myself on the therapy couch, onto my left side and slightly curled in a loose foetal position, Corinna covered me with warm blankets and began the session using a stethoscope to listen to the sounds of my gut. The session continued as Corinna began gentle Biodynamic massage techniques, all the while listening to the sounds of my gut. My part in this was to simply relax.

Why listen to the sounds of my gut?! Most of us have an understanding of our old brain’s ‘fight/flight’ and ‘freeze’ responses to real or perceived danger. Though we might not be presented with the dangers of our distant ancestors, that primitive brain still kicks in and chemical responses occur in our bodies to either give us the strength to ‘run for it’ or stay still, quiet and alert with all senses sharpened. Together with day to day stresses, trauma and unexpressed feelings, if not digested and released properly these reactions can stay locked inside and over time prove detrimental to our physical and emotional health, thereby dampening down our ability to experience joy in our lives. The founder of Biodynamic Medicine, Gerda Boyesen, discovered a switch at the organic and unconscious level that can turn off, unlock and safely release any unwanted fight, flight, freeze, stress, and trauma responses that may have previousely been stuck in the body. It is the sound that these instinctive systems make, that the trained Biodynamic therapist is listening to.

All I can say is that the sounds were interesting, sometimes sounding ‘dolphin-like’ at other times they reminded me of the old ‘dial-up’ sounds of the prehistoric computers we once had!

The session, as before, was blissfully relaxing. Sometimes I dozed, though most of the time I was aware, though also ‘away’ enough to feel deeply rested. At the close of the session which I didn’t want to end, I felt clear headed and revitalised. So much so, that I’ve booked myself in for another treatment later this month.

BIODYNAMIC MEDICINE
The term biodynamic is connected with the flow of life energy through the body and mind. When this natural flow is disturbed we lose our joy and often symptoms can develop. A range of biodynamic treatments and therapies have been developed to:

• Give time and space for your wellbeing
• Restore your natural flow
• Clear the effects of stress
• Promote self-healing and self-regulation
• Help you find courage for change and challenges
• Re-discover your essential self

Biodynamic Psychology was established 60 years ago by Clinical Psychologist, Gerda Boyesen (1922-2005). It has been developed by the Institute of Biodynamic Medicine (formerly Gerda Boyesen International Institute of Biodynamic Psychology and Psychotherapy) which was founded by Mary Molloy in 1989. The biodynamic approach is increasingly used in the fields of trauma recovery, conflict resolution, and pre and post-operative care and with diagnosed and non-diagnosed medical conditions in the new emerging complementary field of Biodynamic Medicine.

A distinguishing aspect of biodynamic practice is the working knowledge that the brain-gut axis is the regulator of nervousness and energy in the body; and that two innate human survival mechanisms – the ‘fight and flight’ and ‘freeze’ responses – if not deactivated or re-activated after an event that is perceived as dangerous, can remain permanently ‘on’ or ‘off’ and adversely affect our emotional and physical wellbeing. As a fundamental aim of each treatment, and in each session, the biodynamic psychotherapist uses a variety of different techniques to ‘find the key’ to enable the client to switch stuck patterns ‘on’ or ‘off’ and restore the spontaneous function of our natural defence mechanisms, thereby returning a person to their natural, exuberant self. This key is known as Psycho-Peristalsis.

“There is an innate healing mechanism in the body which dissolves tension and resolves emotional conflict on the unconscious and organic level.” Gerda Boyesen

By adding bodywork in the form of gentle but effective and targeted biodynamic massage to more traditional psychotherapy and psychology, this holistic healing method not only breaks down the barriers and blocks in your mind, but also works to release stress and tension stored in your body. This reconnects you to what is known in Biodynamic Psychology as the ‘Primary Personality’, your vibrant core self, ready willing and able to meet life’s challenges, and clears the way towards living an authentic and fulfilling life. Once engaged, a natural process of healing unfolds. To allow this to happen organically a series of sessions is recommended in order to provide you with the time and space to heal and focus.

What happens in a biodynamic session?
In the first session you will complete a Client Information Record followed by the Initial Consultation. Once the key matters for you have been established, whether psychological or physical, biodynamic massage or treatment will start. The biodynamic psychotherapist uses a variety of biodynamic methods together with the loudspeaker stethoscope placed on your abdomen to listen to and monitor psycho-peristalsis. This provides crucial diagnostic feedback from your innate and intelligent second brain and is a guide and monitor for effective treatment on all levels.

BIODYNAMIC WELLBEING
The full range of biodynamic therapies are now available with Licensed Biodynamic Psychotherapist, Corinna Kitchen, at Biodynamic Wellbeing (a Registered Biodynamic Clinic) at Equilibrium Health Centre in Lewes.

Who Can Benefit from Biodynamic Therapies?
This safe, deep, healing process can benefit anyone seeking to be free from stress-related symptoms and conditions. It can boost your metabolism, bring peace and calm to shattered nerves, balance the respiratory system, ease anxiety and tension, relieve emotional and physical pain and lift sadness and depression.

In the context of personal development, it can help to rebuild life after loss, clarify and understand challenging emotions or difficult relationships. It is ideal if you are at a crossroad in your life or feeling stuck, or if you are on a path of self-discovery and want help to uncover and heal the aspects that hold you back. Biodynamic therapies can support you through different stages in your life, support you in challenges you are facing, create a safe space for you to explore, share and clarify issues, and empower you to take control of and bring joy to your everyday life.

Bliss under white blankets!
Whilst at the Lewes show in January 2015 I met many fellow exhibitors, though it wasn’t until the end of the first day that I was able to enjoy a treatment. After chatting with Mary Molloy at the Biodynamic Medicine stand, Mary asked if I’d like a first-hand experience. Having not slept much the night before and on my feet all day I jumped at the chance, thinking that although I knew nothing about Biodynamic Medicine, I could at least lay down and snooze perhaps!

Mary explained the philosophy to me, which centres around our basic life-saving defence and protective mechanisms. Most of us are familiar with our old brain ‘fight/flight’ and ‘freeze’ responses to real or perceived danger. Nowadays though we might not be presented with the dangers of our distant ancestors, that primitive brain kicks in and chemical responses occur in our bodies to either give us the strength to ‘run for it’ or stay still, quiet, alert, all senses sharpened! Along with day to day stresses, trauma, and unexpressed feelings, if not digested and released properly these reactions can stay locked inside, and over time and cumulation cause havoc with our physical and emotional health; dampening down our ability to experience joy in our lives.

The founder of Biodynamic Medicine, Gerda Boyesen, discovered a switch – the innate healing ability of the body that dissolves tension, resolves conflict and restores homeostasis at the organic and unconscious level – a switch that could turn off, unlock and safely release any unwanted fight, flight, freeze, stress, trauma responses previously stuck in the body. A trained Biodynamic therapist can listen via a stethoscope to the sounds that the instinctive systems make, and assist as the unravelling of old or stuck defence patterns & mechanisms that are no longer needed by the body are cleared systematically. All the while the person is comfortable, resting, supported and in repose.

I lay comfortably during the session & felt very relaxed as Mary listened, and massaged where she sensed it was needed. Rather than falling asleep as I expected I found myself in a very relaxed, deep yet alert place. It was as if I was very aware, yet seemingly not engaged with much conscious thought; similar to a meditative state. The best words I could find to describe my experience was to say that I was in ‘some blissful place under white blankets!’ After the session I felt very rested and clear headed. Biodynamic Medicine is new to me and I can’t say that I know much about it yet, though I’m intrigued to find out and experience more. My description of Biodynamic Medicine here is no doubt inadequate to explain how it all works. So if you’d like to know more please visit biodynamic.org Mary Molloy is based in beautiful Killala Co.
