Chiropractic care has come a long way in the last few decades in several states of the U.S., including Philadelphia.

Chiropractors can now treat more people and work on more injured areas of your body than ever before. And while it’s hard to imagine that treating bodily pain with a simple manipulation or adjustment could be this effective, it is.

People treated by chiropractors have noticed improved quality of life. They can help you sleep better, live healthier, and feel better about yourself — all because chiropractic care can benefit you holistically.

What Is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic is a non-invasive treatment focusing on the body’s nervous system. It was developed in 1895 by D.D. Palmer, and was inspired by his belief that people could be improved through a better understanding of the body’s natural healing processes.

Chiropractic care aims to restore and maintain optimal health by addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual issues and conditions.

The benefits of chiropractic care include:

Improves Neck Pain

A cervical vertebral subluxation is one of the most common types of misalignments in the neck. The root causes of cervical subluxation are often repetitive motion injuries or trauma, which can cause your neck to become unstable and misaligned over time.

Chiropractic care is a great way to reduce or eliminate these conditions and improve your overall health. Relief from back pain through chiropractic adjustment techniques can help patients live pain-free lives by eliminating the cause of their pain and improving their range of motion.

Decreases Stress

When you are stressed, your body releases hormones that can cause inflammation. Inflammation is a sign of stress. This inflammation can damage your organs and make you sick.

If you are experiencing pain or discomfort in your neck, back, and/or upper extremities, it may be time for an evaluation by the best chiropractor in Philadelphia. A chiropractor will evaluate your condition and explain what is causing your health concerns so that you have the opportunity to make informed decisions regarding treatment options.

Eases Back Pain

Back pain is a common complaint that chiropractors treat. Back pain affects about one in five Americans at some point.

Chiropractors use their hands and fingers to adjust your spine so that you feel much better than before without any side effects or complications. What’s more? They offer a range of other treatments, such as joint manipulation, massage therapy, etc., which relieve muscle spasms and reduce inflammation in the body.

Eases Headache Symptoms

Headaches are often caused by stress or tension in the neck and shoulders, but certain conditions can cause them. For example, suppose you have a condition such as arthritis, osteoporosis, or an injury to your spine. In that case, your headaches could be a symptom of a more severe condition that requires medical attention.

If you have a headache that lasts longer than 24 hours and interferes with your daily activities, it’s best to see a chiropractor who can determine what caused it and how best to treat it. A chiropractor will use his or her skills as an expert in spinal biomechanics to assess your condition thoroughly before determining which course of action is best for you.

To Sum Up

There’s something to be said about holistic wellness and how it shapes the overall state of your life. We’re not talking about just one isolated health issue here, but a complete approach to focus on your body. It’s challenging to find a doctor who will consider all of your physical ailments, but chiropractic practitioners are experts in this field. When you sit down and consider holistic wellness, you’ll realize how valuable chiropractic care is and all it offers.

Mind Your Posture!

Having and maintaining a good posture is a major step in preventing back pain. When leading a busy lifestyle, the basic warning signs of back problems can go unnoticed. Of course no one is immune from back pain, but Lushington chiropractic has some simple advice to help.

James Revell, Doctor of Chiropractic at Lushington Chiropractic explains: “The ideal posture would allow for a plumb line to hang straight through your ear, shoulder, hip, knee and ankle. Try and stand in a relaxed way but gently contracting your abdominal muscles. When sitting, the same is true. The gravity line should pass thorough ear, shoulder and hip.

Give your posture a sporting chance
Any unaccustomed exercise can put you at risk of back pain. You might only play a relaxed, low-risk sport once a week, though you still need to prepare yourself sufficiently – mentally and physically. Warming up and warming down is essential to ensure that your joints and muscles don’t get a shock. Strong abdominal muscles can potentially help to prevent a bad back.

Don’t just sit there!
A lack of exercise is your worst enemy. Regular exercise is essential, as the fitter you are the less likely you are to injure yourself. Simple activities such as stretching and shoulder shrugging can all help to keep your back in line. Do not sit for prolonged periods.

Don’t drive yourself around the bend
When driving long distances for work, on the school run or picking up the monthly shop, the last thing on our minds is the state of our backs whilst in the driving seat. There is almost twice as much pressure on your back when you are sitting incorrectly than there is if you stand up. Relax – a relaxed driving position reduces stress on the spine. Allow your seat to take your weight; try and make sure you are sitting as far back in the car seat as possible so it can support you fully.

Sit up straight in front of the TV
When you are relaxing in front of the TV the tendency is to ‘slouch’ when sitting. The ideal sitting position is to let the seat take your weight and, if possible, keep as much of your body in contact with the chair so that your whole body is supported.

Carry with care
Be aware of the potential dangers of putting more strain on one side of the body more than the other. Any bag that spreads equal weight on both shoulders is preferred, so if you can carry items in a rucksack – do it! Adjust the straps of a bag to keep it as close to the back as possible which ensures the weight is evenly distributed across the back.

Perfect PC posture
A lot of people spend hours in front of a PC each day – make sure you are sitting comfortably and have your spine supported. Don’t forget to shift position from time to time. Limit yourself to forty-minutes sitting at a time and take regular breaks. If possible, have your arms supported.

And so to bed
Try and adopt a sleeping position which creates less physical stress on the back first thing in the morning. For example, lay on your side and not on your front with your neck twisted. When you wake up, try some gentle stretches, such as drawing your knees to your chest, before getting out of bed.

The chiropractors at Lushington Chiropractic are always happy to help. Feel free to telephone the clinic on 01323 722499

Eastbourne Chiropractor, Dr Gemma Crouch, is offering complimentary health and posture checks for children at Lushington Chiropractic.

During February Lushington Chiropractic is working with the children’s charity Barnardo’s to help with their fundraising. In return for a suitable donation to Barnardo’s, your child will receive a complimentary health and posture check with our lovely chiropractor Dr Gemma Crouch.

Why Have a Check?

Thousands of babies and children regularly have check-ups with chiropractors throughout the UK. As with adults, children’s spines can also be affected by activities of daily living with posture playing a huge role in our everyday health.

Consumer research has found that half of teenagers have suffered with headaches, back or neck problems. With modern lifestyle increasing this risk, it is worth avoiding bad posture and overloading your muscles and joints where possible.

What’s Involved?

These health and posture checks will provide you with the opportunity to discuss your case with a fully qualified and experienced chiropractor.

Chiropractor Dr Gemma Crouch has a special interest in chiropractic care for pregnant mums, babies and children and her focus is to find the root cause of a problem and to improve overall health.

You will also have the opportunity to receive lifestyle advice on nutrition, posture and even exercises tailored to you and your needs.

What is a Chiropractor?

Pediatric chiropractors have expert training to diagnose, treat and prevent muscle and joint problems throughout the body and the effect they can have on the nervous system and general health. With a focus on the spine, chiropractors also look at musculoskeletal (muscle and joint) problems in other areas, such as the arms and legs.

Who are Lushington Chiropractic?

LOOK OUT FATHER CHRISTMAS!

This is a busy time of year for Father Christmas. He will be rushing around checking his list of good boys and girls, planning his present deliveries and making sure his reindeer are ready for the big night. It’s a good job he has been preparing all year.

Father Christmas is not getting any younger. So with all his lifting of heavy bags of toys and getting stuck in old chimneys he has to take care of his back. We all get caught up in the ever increasing run up to the festive season, and it’s worth looking after ourselves and following good chiropractic advice:

DON’T SHOP TILL YOU DROP
This applies to us, more than to Father Christmas. Shopping really aggravates back problems. Wandering around the Arndale Centre, carrying all those Christmas goodies can cause joint aches and muscle stiffness. The best thing is to pace yourself, take a break when you need to.

WALKS
Walks can help gently mobilise the back. Bed rest is a thing of the past. It’s usually best to keep active. Father Christmas will have to be careful on those roof tops.

GOOD POSTURE
Good posture helps avoid injury in the first place. Avoid lifting and twisting at the same time (especially if you’re carrying heavy toys). It’s best to bend your knees and brace yourself by holding your tummy tight. Working in cramped spaces (chimneys) or having bad posture can cause very mild but constant wear and tear.

DRINK
Drink plenty of water. Dehydration affects the whole body, even the discs in your back! The recommended minimum is at least 4 pints of water per day.

ICE
Ice helps to ease any immediate sprains and strains. An ice pack (or rooftop snow) should be lightly wrapped so it doesn’t freeze the skin (a tea towel will do). It should then be placed against the injury and must not be left on for more than 10 minutes at a time.

DON’T IGNORE IT!
Pain can be a warning sign. If you hurt yourself (from sudden sleigh stops for instance) it’s always best to seek expert advice and treatment as soon as possible. Pain is an important warning, don’t ignore it!

As a treat for Father Christmas (or one of his helpers), leave your Wellbeing Magazine out this year. He can read these tips whilst he enjoys his mince pies and sherry.

Why doesn’t my baby sleep at night? Eastbourne Chiropractor, Dr Gemma Crouch shares six reasons why babies can’t sleep at night.

During pregnancy, your baby develops a sleep-wake cycle based on your normal heart rate and activity. If you were active a lot during the night time, such as getting up to urinate often or standing up to relieve some discomfort, then it is likely that your baby has fallen into a similar routine of night time waking.

There are many other reasons, however, why a baby may not sleep at night. Chiropractic can help with some of these reasons and a chiropractic check-up is recommended if you think they apply to your baby.

Here at Lushington Chiropractic in Eastbourne we see many young babies – much to the surprise of our other guests!

1: Your Baby Is Uncomfortable
The 1992 American Paediatric campaign ‘Back to Sleep’ recommended that all babies should be placed on their back to get to sleep. If babies are left for long periods of time, such as at night time, or have trouble in remaining comfortable in this position, they can become irritable and find it difficult to sleep.

Signs that your baby does not like lying on their back:

  • Arching their back as if in discomfort
  • Lifting their legs up as if in pain
  • Irritability that is consoled with a change in position

If your baby shows one or more of these signs, it could indicate that your baby is suffering from a musculoskeletal (muscles and joints) problem. Chiropractic care is a safe and effective way to relieve these types of problems in babies.

2: Your Baby Experienced Birth Trauma
Entry into this world can be a very difficult experience for your little one, even with a natural birth. Intrauterine constraint, back-to-back delivery, breech position and assisted delivery (such as C-section or forceps) can all cause the delicate musculoskeletal system of your infant to become irritated.

Signs that your baby has a musculoskeletal problem due to birth trauma:

  • A dislike to lying on their back
  • Not easily settled to sleep and waking frequently
  • Irritability
  • A preference to looking one way
  • A preference to lying and feeding upright

If your baby shows one or more of these signs, it may indicate that your baby is suffering from a musculoskeletal problem related to birth trauma. Chiropractic care is a safe and effective way to help relieve these types of musculoskeletal problems in babies.

Treatments I use are modified to suit babies and young children, they are very gentle and controlled.

3: Your Baby Is Hungry
The most common reason for a baby to wake at night is due to hunger. Parents should be able to recognise the specific crying and behaviour when their baby is hungry. An irritable cry is more high-pitched.

Night feeds should take place at regular intervals and preferably at a similar time each night. It is best to feed your baby in a cool, calm and quiet environment to avoid over-stimulating your baby.

4: Your Baby Has Started Teething
At around 3-6 months of age, your baby will start teething. This can make your baby very irritable and cause them to frequently wake during the night. Often, your baby will have a slightly red colour to their cheeks. You may also notice your baby drools or chews on their fingers. Speak to your pharmacist or GP for advice on pain relief for your baby.

5: Your Baby Is Overly Tired
Babies tend to settle to sleep quicker when they have specific sleeping routines and are encouraged to be active during the day. Here are some useful tips to resettling your baby’s internal clock:

  • Wake your baby at similar times every morning
  • Change your baby out of their night clothes soon after waking them
  • Play with them as much as you can during the day and ensure that Tummy Time and all other activities with your child are supervised
  • Keep the room where your baby sleeps at night as cool and as dark as possible

6: Your Baby May Have Digestive Problems
Excessive gas and reflux can cause discomfort for your baby and disrupt their sleep. After feeds, gentle massage and winding can relieve some of your baby’s discomfort. It is important, however, to be aware of the signs of allergy or intolerance. Seek advice from your doctor if you suspect your child has a food allergy or intolerance.

If you want to find out more about how chiropractic care can help your child or to make an appointment, visit Lushington Chiropractic to find out more.

D.I.Y. Don’t Injure Yourself!

The nation’s DIYers will be coming out of the woodwork for the summer holidays as the DIY season sets in, and Dr James Revell warns that care should be taken before everyone rushes off to get to grips with those home improvement jobs they have been putting off.

In an attempt to reduce injury, Lushington Chiropractic has identified the top three home improvement tasks which can lead to DIY disaster:

  • painting and decorating
  • pruning and patios
  • moving and lifting

So, Wellbeing readers take heed, if you are planning a new patio or a splash of colour on the walls, Dr Revell has this advice for you:

  • Reach for the sky – if you are planning on painting a ceiling think about getting the largest amount of paint on in the shortest space of time
  • Use a paint pad or roller with an extended handle and hold it at chest height. Keep your head as neutral as possible and facing forward
  • Don’t twist – use a ladder – always face it and move the ladder regularly. Always keep your shoulders, hips and knees pointing in the same direction
  • If you are pruning use long handled secateurs and get as close to the plants as you can, and a top tip is to prune before you plant!
  • If laying a patio keep the slab close to your body and bend your knees
  • Vary your activity – spend no more than 20-30 minutes on any one thing and take breaks
  • Pain is a warning sign do not ignore it – if you start to ache then stop what you are doing.

Hi, my name is Mykel Mason DC, LRCC, MChiro. I am a Doctor of Chiropractic, which means I’m a specialist in muscle, joint and trapped nerve type problems.

I grew up here in Eastbourne and always planned to return once I’d qualified as a chiropractor to help people in my local community. For the last few years, I’ve practiced at the award-winning Lushington Chiropractic Clinic in the town centre.

Everyone at Lushington Chiropractic is highly qualified and driven to give the best possible care to our patients. I enjoy working with our team of chiropractors and other practitioners because everyone in the team is so genuinely caring, professional and kind.

The clinic was established in 2005, by Doctor of Chiropractic James Revell DC, LRCC, MSc, BSc, who also grew up locally. Our mission is to provide a warm, welcoming clinic which consistently provides the best possible customer service, expert diagnosis and personalised healthcare.

Everyone at the clinic is passionate about the care they provide and I love the way our reception team look after our patient’s when they visit. The clinic has developed an excellent reputation for many years. We’re often very busy, with most of our new patients recommended to us personally by friends or their GP.

One of our core values is to serve our community. I’m proud of the charitable work the clinic does, as well as all the free advice and free help we offer people through workshops, talks and online blogs (check out my blogs on www.backblog.co.uk a free resource we’ve created at the clinic with over 200 self-help and advice blogs). If you’d like me to give your local group a talk on some self-help advice for back pain or arthritis etc then you can contact me at the clinic.

If you, or someone you care about is suffering then I’d be very pleased to help. The first stage is consultation, which takes 45 minutes to an hour. Over the years in practice I’ve seen people with a wide range of problems from headaches, shoulder pain, sciatica and of course back-pain! I find it very rewarding to make a difference and help people.

I use a range of techniques and give lots of self-help advice too. Some people don’t like the physicality and ‘clicks’ often associated with chiropractic and I love explaining there are other options. I’ve enjoyed bringing my style of chiropractic to Eastbourne, and am delighted to be working as part of the award-winning team at Lushington Chiropractic.

As part of our commitment to helping our community I’m waiving my usual £49 consultation fee entirely this summer and instead am just asking for a donation of your choice to St Wilfrid’s. There’s no charge from us at all, the consultation is free, we just ask you make a donation of your choice to the charity when you come.

This is available until the end of August to Wellbeing readers. Please mention the offer and make sure you book with me – Mykel Mason, Doctor of Chiropractic. If you have any questions at all then I’ll be very happy to help, just call the clinic on 01323 722499.

Thank you and I look forward to seeing you, and helping raise some funds for our local hospice.

Wellbeing Day a Great Success!

Lushington Chiropractic’s Wellbeing Day on 26th April was a great success with visitors of all ages, and raised over £100 for Dr Barnardo’s Children’s Charity. Their Guest of Honour was Dr Jonathan Andrews MB BS BSc (Hons) DCH DRCOG DFFP MRCGP, from Princes Park Health Centre. As well as cutting the clinic’s 12th Birthday Cake, he enjoyed the day and got his posture checked whilst he was there!

The Wellbeing Day included a range of talks from Lushington practitioners, with lots of self-help advice and tips. They also offered free posture assessments on the day with chiropractic advice and help. The Acupuncturists, Dr Carolyn Rubens (GP & Medical Acupuncturist) and Robert Bowley (Chinese Acupuncturist) were busy on the day explaining about how the two forms of acupuncture work.

All the practitioners kindly donated their time for free to help raise money for Dr Barnardo’s Children’s Charity. The most popular treatments were the massage tasters.

Posture is the position in which we hold our bodies while standing, sitting or lying down, and improved posture can lead to better wellbeing.

When your posture is poor it can increase pressure on your spine, which can lead to tension, soreness, headaches, back pain and fatigue. Postural imbalance also compresses your internal organs, reducing their efficiency and normal functions.

Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms of poor posture – it takes a lot of energy to hold the body in any awkward position that, in turn, alters our breathing capacity which can be diminished by up to thirty percent!

Good posture is the correct alignment of body parts supported by the right amount of muscle tension against gravity. A good postural position permits you to breathe better, and as a result reduces fatigue and minimises other side-effects associated with poor posture.

Proper posture keeps muscles, ligaments, bones and internal organs in their natural position, thus reducing wear and tear of joints and relieving stress, improving health and enhancing your appearance.

Good posture can also increase self confidence – one study has revealed that people adopting good posture not only display greater confidence they also have stronger beliefs in their own abilities than those with poor posture.

Correcting bad posture does take discipline, though there is no doubt that the benefits are worth the effort.

You can easily find out about your posture by booking in for a FREE Chiropractic Posture Check and balance assessment at Physio Plus, in Eastbourne.
