Hundreds of people took on the Big Welsh Walk Challenge last year and conquered the landscapes of Ceredigion. Back by popular demand, Ramblers Cymru are encouraging people to step up for the challenge this June.

Starting in Devil’s Bridge, Ceredigion on Saturday 2 June there are four walks to choose from, ranging from 6 to 20 miles.  Each route will give walkers the chance to experience the stunning landscapes, highlighting breath taking scenery along the way.

Ramblers Cymru Director Angela Charlton said: “Our Big Welsh Walk has something to challenge everyone. Whether you’re new to walking and want to take on the 6 mile challenge, whilst enjoying the stunning surroundings, or an experienced rambler racing to be the first person across the finish line on the 20 mile route.

“We’ve devised four different walks, taking people through open moorlands, along valley gorges and glaciated valleys and climbing high into the Cambrian Mountains – so your efforts are sure to be rewarded.

“Not only will you be challenging yourself to reach new heights, you’ll also be helping to raise funds to ensure incredible paths like these are well maintained for everyone to enjoy.”

The Big Welsh Walk is supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery to help everyone, everywhere enjoy walking.

The Big Welsh Walk costs £20 to enter. The money raised will go towards Ramblers Cymru’s charitable efforts to maintain paths across Wales. Volunteer teams throughout the nation work tirelessly to help maintain and improve paths each week so everyone can enjoy a walk in Wales, whether that’s to the local shops or to the top of a mountain.

On entering, participants will receive a Big Welsh Walk T-shirt, medal and can also enjoy discounted deals at selected local businesses, including accommodation, restaurants and attractions.

So Wellbeing readers, are you making the most of the summer in Sussex by being outdoors, enjoying a country walk, game of tennis or a round of golf?

Many of us try to get a bit healthier in the Summer by exercising and watching what we eat. But it’s all too easy to fall into some fad or one minute wonder. Getting fit and healthy for summer involves lifestyle changes and sustained good habits. We’ve got a few practical pointers:

  1. If you are going to get fit this summer then remember to drink lots of water. We should have about 6 to 8 glasses a day. Feeling hungry can sometimes be sign that your body is dehydrated and you need more water.
  2. If you want to lose weight then beware of carbohydrates late in the day. Bread, pasta and potatoes are the usual culprits. We need carbohydrates for energy. We can’t do without them altogether but many of us eat too many in the evenings.
  3. Summer is a great time to make sure you are getting your five-a-day. This means a mixture of fruit and veg, not just extra helpings of sweet fruits like strawberries!
  4. Think positively and be happier. When you reach your health goals or you keep to a new habit, remember to celebrate and congratulate yourself. Don’t make it all hard work or you’ll never stick to it.
  5. Take new exercise or activity carefully, listen to your body and stop if you feel any pain.
  6. DIY and gardening are great ways to get something done around the house and keep more active. Listen to your body when you get tired or achy. There is no point in pushing through pain barriers. You can always finish the job tomorrow.
