Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from plants, fruits and flowers. From their divine smell to their wonderful healing properties, essential oils can help to lift your mood, calm you when you are stressed, boost your circulation if you are feeling chilly and help to relieve colds and flu.

If you are finding that the colder and darker days are having an impact on your mood then Grapefruit oil is a wonderful oil to use at this time of the year for its mind clearing and uplifting properties. Its anti-viral properties also make it very effective for colds and flu. If you are looking for a positive way to deal with stress, try taking an hour out for a deeply soothing massage to help you unwind. Chamomile oil is calming and relaxing on both mind and body. Its anti-inflammatory properties can help with pain relief and any skin irritations that can occur during the colder months, such as eczema. To boost circulation, Rosemary oil is very stimulating and can help with warming up cold hands and feet which can affect many of us during winter. It is also useful for stimulating memory and concentration so it can help you to feel more focused as a New Year begins.

Having an aromatherapy massage can be one of the most relaxing ways to benefit from essential oils. First the essential oils are blended into a carrier oil such as sweet almond or grapeseed, then using a variety of different massage strokes they are massaged onto your skin, where they are absorbed and begin to work their healing properties.

How far can a therapist take you? https://wellbeingmagazine.com/far-can-therapist-take/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=far-can-therapist-take Tue, 08 Jul 2014 11:19:35 +0000 http://wellbeingmagazine.com/?p=912 One of the most important issues when choosing a therapist is finding one who has travelled their own path and faced, if not completely worked through, their own difficult issues. One of the most important issues when choosing a therapist is finding one who has travelled their own path and faced, if not completely worked through, their own difficult issues. They don’t need to have everything perfectly resolved, even if that were possible. Though they do need to have done the hard work of looking at themselves in their own therapy. This may involve becoming more aware of what they project onto others, realising that they suppress certain feelings like anger or vulnerability, gaining some understanding about their own blind spots and learning to cultivate some love and acceptance. The danger of seeing a therapist who hasn’t done their own work to a deep enough level is that certain areas of the client’s life may subtly become “off limits”, at an unconscious level, in the therapy room.

I remember one therapist whose client told him that whenever she brought up anything to do with her sexuality, the blood drained from his face and she got the non-verbal message it was not ok to talk about this subject. He was unaware of this until she gave him the feedback. This story shows the importance of therapists having done their own work in therapy, and also continuing to be curious about where their blind spots might be because it is never possible to become completely free of them. This ongoing work can be done by the therapist in their own therapy or in clinical supervision.

I was reminded of the importance of this area recently when reading a book by child expert, Margot Sunderland, about using stories to work therapeutically with troubled children. She says it can be tempting for some adults to make the story have a happy ending, even though the child has left the ending unresolved. For example, the listening adult may say, ‘No, don’t leave the little peanut in the gutter – let’s find it a nice home to go to.’ This is an example of the adult’s need to make everything all right, when maybe by leaving the peanut in the gutter the child is trying to communicate his feelings of hopelessness. “This is a common problem when the…listener (usually out of conscious awareness) is running away from her own hopelessness, despair, grief and so on.”

So, seeing a therapist who has not done enough of their own psychological work can make the therapy less rich and less effective. Instead of unconsciously giving permission for the client to bring whatever they need to, the therapist can turn into an advice dispenser or a rescuer who needs the client to behave a certain way.

How I work
I am a Psychosynthesis counsellor. This means that as well as giving you practical help, I also work in a soulful way. This involves seeing painful experiences and problems as important influences that shape our character and can, ultimately, bring wisdom and self-knowledge.

The Human Touch project opened on the 3rd February and is already being well received. We are hearing great feedback about our affordable therapies – price of £10 for a 30 minute session for psychological and physical therapies. Since our opening, there have been a few changes.

Asha Rani has joined us. She is an experienced nutritionist and iridologist. Asha worked as an in-flight cabin crew member for many years and realised her full time occupation was becoming increasingly unhealthy; flying all over the world and often eating poorly. This led to an interest in nutrition and complementary health therapies. Today Asha is a fully qualified nutritionist and iridologist, she has also completed a course in Indian head massage and cranial sacral therapy. Asha will be offering a short iris diagnosis which will identify your constitution with some general nutritional advice. A more in depth consultation can booked separately.

She will also be offering Indian head massage which can be done with or without oils. Massaging the scalp stimulates the flow of blood to the follicles, improving the supply of nutrients needed for healthy hair growth. Head massage not only improves the condition of your hair, it also provides an invaluable treatment for stress related problems. Asha will also be offering taster sessions for cranial sacral therapy. CST is a powerful hands on therapy, where the touch is gentle and non-invasive. Patients find CST to be effective for a wide range of problems including discomfort, pain and dysfunction.

Sarah Pearce has also joined us. She is a homeopath and has been using homeopathy to treat her family for over 20 years. Homeopathy is a way of treating the whole person, so it is known as a holistic therapy. In taking your case Sarah will consider your emotional and physical wellbeing through the use of a consultation allowing for information gathering about your medical and your family history. Homeopathy can be used safely on anyone, with any ailment. It can even be used on babies or very frail people. The remedies can be taken during pregnancy or alongside other medications you may have been prescribed. This is because the remedies are safe and free from side effects.

Sophie Joseph has left the project to pursue other options related to her development within teaching meditation, and we wish her continued success.

We will continue to be open most Monday evenings from 6 till 9pm. For further information regarding opening dates and times, to enquire about the affordable therapies, or to make a booking call Mary on 07796 518667 or see The Human Touch on Facebook  The Human Touch West Street, Shoreham by Sea.
