62% of Brits admit to having sleepless nights because of muscle and joint pain. Here’s how to rest easy…

Most of us will have experienced a poor night’s sleep, or a period of bad sleep, at some point or other, and it’s likely you might be familiar with the groggy, tired feelings that can follow a lack of decent rest. But what’s causing poor sleep?

One big reason behind the nation’s sleepless nights is pain. That’s according to research by the topical muscle and joint pain specialists – Deep Relief – www.deep-relief.co.uk – who have found that 62% of Brits have endured poor sleep thanks to muscle and joint pain.

But with the clocks going back at the end of October and potentially more time spent in bed, it’s important to shift these sleep struggles and get sleep back on track.

Deep Relief expert hub member and pharmacist, Mark Burdon says: “A lack of sleep doesn’t just leave us sleepy the next day. Sleep is vital for overall good health – for both mind and body – which is why the NHS recommends that all adults get between seven and nine hours of sleep every single night. It’s National Self-Care Week from November 18 so there’s no better time to make sleep a priority.”

GP and Deep Relief expert hub member, Dr Gill Jenkins adds: “The problem we face is that good quality sleep can help to heal pain but muscle and joint pain is clearly the reason behind so many people’s bad sleep. It’s a catch 22. Research actually shows that sleep deprivation can alter the nerve signals in the brain and reduce the pain threshold. And, a lack of sleep has been shown to also hinder emotional and cognitive abilities, making it harder to cope with pain.”

The pain that Brits are experiencing is varied, however the majority (57%) say they suffer from back pain according to the Deep Relief real-world research poll. Muscle pain in particular, felt by 51% of Brits is also a burden with 56% saying they suffer from lower back pain, 46% are dealing with leg pain and 34% say they suffer from shoulder pain. As for joint pain, 41% say they feel it in their knees, 34% feel it in their back and 26% feel joint pain in their shoulders.

But what’s causing this pain? According to the Deep Relief real-world research, 33% feel joint pain due to a sports injury, 32% experience joint inflammation because of walking and 26% feel it due to gardening.

A high 79% of people get twangs of pain which they ignore and 29% say they do this because it is part of ageing.

Physiotherapist, sleep expert and a Deep Relief expert hub member, Sammy Margo explains: “Pain doesn’t need to be a natural part of ageing, especially when it disrupts sleep, a pivotal part of good health. A staggeringly high 92% of Deep Relief respondents believe there should be more understanding of joint and muscle pain and the same number rightly feel that muscle and joint pain leads to other sorts of pain. So, we need to sort out the pains we’re feeling and get the nation feeling good again.”

Many Brits are also hiding their pain, as 75% of people try to mask the muscle or joint pain they’re experiencing and 31 percent do so because they believe this makes the pain less severe.

A high 72% also try to hide the emotional pain which is associated with joint or muscle pain and 31% do this as they do not wish others to see how much the pain is affecting them. A quarter of Brits (25%) also say they feel embarrassed.

Mark Burdon adds: “Ignoring the pain could just make it worse, in turn, ruining sleep even more. So, it’s crucial we find ways to deal with the pain and help to make bedtime more comfortable.”

4 Expert Tips For A Good Night’s Sleep

Rather than letting pain disrupt your sleep, it’s time to take action and make sleep a priority, for the sake of your overall health and wellbeing.

#1. Sort your sleep position.  Physiotherapist Sammy Margo explains: “Finding a position that’s comfortable can help to avoid pain from disrupting sleep and it can stop you from developing pain in the first place.”

Sammy Margo adds: “If you’re a side sleeper, place a pillow between your knees to align your spine and hips. If you sleep on your back – which is the best position to try and sleep- pop a pillow underneath your knees, to take pressure off joints.”

If you can, avoid sleeping on your front as this can lead to neck pain from turning your head to the side as you sleep.

#2. Use Deep Relief. Sammy Margo recommends the Deep Relief range as a good place to start to ease achy muscles and joints, as each product provides a simple step to ease aches.

Deep Relief Anti-inflammatory Gel offers penetrating, fast-cooling targeted pain relief which starts working in 10 minutes.1 “It’s ideal for those who need powerful pain and inflammation relief for the back, muscles, or rheumatism,” says Mark Burden. Deep Relief Joint Pain Gel  also offers effective relief of pain associated with non-serious arthritic conditions as well as muscular aches, pains, and swellings such as strains, sprains, and sport injuries, plus back pain. Both the Deep Relief Anti-inflammatory Gel and Deep Relief Joint Pain Gel contain two painkilling ingredients – Ibuprofen and Levomenthol with a triple action.

Mark Burden adds: “Ibuprofen is an effective, evidence backed Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID), which works on reducing pain and inflammation. Meanwhile, levomenthol works on the nerve endings in the skin, giving a soothing, cooling effect, while its counter-irritant activity stimulates the nerves that perceive cold and inhibits those that perceive pain. All combined in an aqueous gel, which adds to the soothing and cooling effect. The Deep Relief gel formulation penetrates through the skin rapidly, achieving high, therapeutically relevant local concentrations in underlying soft tissues, muscles, and joints.”

#3. Wear Deep Relief Actiflex Patch at night.  There is a way to help ease achy joints throughout the entire night.

Sammy Margo adds: “I love  Deep Relief Actiflex Patch as it’s a non-medicated, easy to use, cooling, soothing patch designed to get you through day or night. It’s perfect to wear under clothing or while sleeping, for up to 12 hours and offers a flexible fit for shoulders, hips, elbows, knees, wrists, and ankles.

#4. Make sure you move. You may think that when you’re suffering from pain, the best thing to do is stay still during the day. However, Sammy Margo says this couldn’t be further from the truth.  “Include a range of different types of movement throughout the day, such as swimming, walking, squats, and stretching to help maintain a good range of motion and joint flexibility. Be sure to always warm up first to help avoid further pain. If you’re a desk worker or you spend a lot of time driving, then you should aim to take regular breaks where you can to stand up and stretch out and move.”

Ultimately, pain doesn’t need to be the sleep saboteur that it so clearly is. Sammy Margo in summary explains: “We can all experience a good night’s sleep, we just need to put the correct steps in place to ensure our muscles and joints aren’t keeping us awake at night so we can get the healing sleep we need. I highly recommend the Deep Relief products as they offer fast-acting, targeted relief so Brits can sleep easy.”

The number of people using CBD oil in the UK has doubled over the past year, and according to a World Health Organization Report in 2018, there are now an estimated 250,000 users of CBD Oil across the UK.

In 2017, I discovered the incredible benefits that CBD oil had on my extremely painful arthritic knee. I led (and still do) a very active life, caring for my grandchildren, running my own businesses, looking after my horses and dog. Feeling so inspired by the change I saw in my lifestyle, I decided to start my own business selling CBD oil.

What is CBD Oil?
Firstly, I often get asked, ‘does CBD make you high?’. The answer is NO! Good quality CBD does not contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), meaning CBD does not produce the psychoactive effects that make you feel ‘high’ and it is therefore legal in the UK. CBD is the abbreviation for Cannabidiol, found in the cannabis plant, commonly known as the Hemp plant. CBD oil is the oil extract taken from the plant. Cannabidiol is non-psychoactive, non-addictive and has been shown to provide many positive effects with more people now understanding the benefits of having a healthy endocannabinoid system.

CBD Oil Benefits
CBD has been studied around the world for its natural benefits in pain relief, anxiety, insomnia, depression and inflammation. One of the most common benefits is pain relief. CBD interacts with receptors in the brain and immune system to reduce inflammation. From back pain, neck pain to arthritic pains, the benefits are incredible and result in individuals taking CBD as a natural pain relief, rather than any prescribed medicine or pain killers.

Many of my customers use CBD oil for insomnia, depression and anxiety. CBD can help to lift the mood in a more natural way, making you feel calmer and more balanced. A friend of mine started taking it for PTSD – she had high anxiety and panic attacks. After two weeks the panic attacks had stopped, and she was sleeping much better.

Another client takes it for back pain – he has a swelling in a disk and has said that CBD oil has worked better than any prescribed medicine.

Indi Oils also produce a balm which is great for skin conditions such as eczema and dry skin.

I supply a local Homeopathic Vet Practise with CBD oil as it is also beneficial for horses, dogs and cats – they have a cannabidiol system just like us!

How do you take CBD Oil?
CBD is taken as a food supplement to increase your body’s own naturally produced ‘Cannabinoids’. Everyone is unique and how you respond to the CBD maybe different from one person to another. It is recommended that you start with a small dose and gradually build up over a few days. Indi Oils come in an easy to use spray bottle. Ideally taken before food, the oil is sprayed under your tongue and held there for a few minutes if possible. This is the quickest route into the bloodstream.

What else is in CBD Oil?
The cannabis that we use in Indi Oils is grown without the use of any pesticides, herbicides, artificial fertilisers or harmful chemicals. Hemp does not require any additional, unnatural help in growing due to it being an incredibly resilient and fast-growing plant. Our CBD Entourage Oil is vegan and lactose friendly and is regularly lab tested.

How much should I take?
This really depends on the type of pain or what you wish to take it for. As a small local business, I offer a personal service and am happy to speak to clients before they decide which strength to take. I do not diagnose or give medical advice but can offer friendly support!

If you are currently on medication, as with all supplements and wellbeing products it is always recommended to consult your doctor or healthcare professional before taking CBD.

How do I choose?
There are so many CBD products on the market right now. Poor quality products have resulted in bad press. Indi Oils is a member of the CTA – The Cannabis Trades Association – which is the only cannabinoid centric trade association for the UK and Europe, working with all sectors of the hemp and cannabis industry to promote good practice, provide practical advice and ensure consumers of legal cannabis and hemp products have access to top quality information.

The secret to staying injury free this skiing season, revealed by experts from the One Stop Winter Clinic

With the fresh mountain air and idyllic landscape views, it could be easy to forget the dangers of the skiing as you hurtle down the piste. However, approximately 10,000 skiers and snowboarders from the UK are admitted to hospital every year with injuries following their winter-sports holidays. Whether it’s concussion, broken bones, sprained wrists or torn ligaments, the potential for casualties is endless, and with rising numbers of new skiers taking to the pistes this season, medical experts urge winter holidaymakers to be aware of the dangers during a skiing trip.
London Bridge Hospital (www.londonbridgehospital.london) experts, Consultant Specialist Knee Surgeon, Mr Adil Ajuied and Consultant Knee Surgeon, Mr James Bliss treat some of the most chronic injuries following a skiing incident. Each Consultant from London Bridge Hospital’s One Stop Winter Clinic can offer advice on how to avoid injuries that can ruin your holiday and impact on your quality of life.

Mr Adil Ajuied, Consultant Specialist Knee Surgeon at London Bridge Hospital, provides some top tips to make sure you fully enjoy your time on the pistes this winter:

Pre-ski fitness and strengthening
Ski holidays are very physically demanding. They place demands on muscles we do not routinely challenge and make us use our joints in ways we do not usually use them. For these reasons, we are at risk of injury both early on in our holiday, while we find our ski legs, and mid-way through our holiday as we start to fatigue and become stiff and sore. It is therefore strongly recommended that you train for your ski holiday, in the same way one would train for a running event, to prevent injury and maximize enjoyment. Many physiotherapists now offer pre-ski classes to help you get into shape.

Do not over tighten bindings
Bindings must be professionally fitted and not over tensioned, as the failure of a ski to detach during a fall results in significant and dramatic increase in the torque going through the knee. This dramatically increases the risk of injury to ligaments or fracture.

Consider ski lessons
No matter what your level of expertise and experience, it is always worth considering some coaching lessons to help hone and improve your technique. This will have the dual effect of protecting you from injury and helping you impress your friends and family.

Rest
Being fatigued, stiff, and tired increases your chance of injury. So it is important to warm up when skiing, stretch and warm down after skiing. You should also make sure you have enough rest and relaxation between your visits to the slopes.

Read the conditions
Seek good conditions and take advice from locals who will often know the good spots. A large proportion of ski injuries results from collisions – avoiding over-crowded slopes and the busiest times will reduce the chances of collisions.

Do not ski on an injury
If you are unfortunate enough to be injured, it is important to rest the injury and have it professionally assessed, as skiing on an injury significantly increases the risk of re-injury.”

Mr James Bliss, Consultant Knee Surgeon at London Bridge Hospital, comments on the most frequently seen injuries following skiing:

“The three most common injuries around the knee are sprains of the medial collateral ligament, which should settle with rehabilitation, Meniscal cartilage tears and an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) – these last two types of injury should be assessed by a knee specialist orthopaedic surgeon.

“Once you have injured yourself, it’s usually best not to test out the injury, to see if it can hold up to another ski run. Ice the injured area and see how it feels the next day and observe how much swelling occurs over 12-24 hours. Significant swelling or pain generally means that further skiing is probably short sighted.

“Skiing injuries are slowly on the rise, as more and more people take to the slopes over the winter months. Interestingly, when carver skis were introduced a few years ago there was an increase in knee injuries due to inexperienced skiers being able to edge a ski more easily and therefore put more rotational loads through their knees.”

The One Stop Winter Clinic is a designated service at London Bridge Hospital that offers accurate and swift assessment of ski injuries using state of the art scanners. Following referrals to a physiotherapist who work with a leading Orthopaedic team, they will aid rehabilitation and help sportsmen and women in getting back to optimum fitness and allow them to return to the enjoy the snow.
