Intuitive Horse offer 3-day personal development retreats, held most months from March through to November. The retreats are designed for people interested in their own personal development, who like horses, or who are experiencing something in their lives they need help and insight with. No experience with horses is necessary, also attendees don’t need to have any riding abilities, as all work with the horses is done from the ground.

Being prey animals, horses are very sensitive to their environment and as a result are very good at reading a person’s emotional state. As horses don’t use spoken language they are tuned into feeling states and body language, and this is also how they communicate with each other.

Through exploring how to connect with a horse, people often become aware of behaviours and mind states that might be inhibiting connection with the horse. By becoming aware of these, with the help of the facilitator, a person can start to explore different ways of relating. The horse then changes its’ response to the person as they shift, giving instant feedback. The person can then reflect as to how this interaction with the horse may be relevant to other areas of their life, and how they can begin to work with their new insights.

By the end of the 3 days a person may have:

  • An understanding in emotional responsibility
  • An awareness of how their environment responds to their emotional state
  • Become aware of certain patterns in their life which may be presenting themselves, and how to change them if necessary
  • A broader self-awareness
  • Trust to work with their intuition
  • Learnt how to ‘be’ with a horse, and in turn themselves
  • Learnt how to quieten the mind
  • A knowledge in equine behaviour

Intuitive Horse is based in Hastings, East Sussex, where their herd of fifteen horses live as a natural herd on their 110 acre farm. Over the three days people get to work 1-1 with a horse as well as work with the whole herd on the last day. The retreat is designed to allow everyone to work at their own pace. People with a fear of horses are welcomed.

Have you ever dreamt of having your own horse? Or would you like to spend more time with horses but can’t find a way of doing this other than your hourly riding lesson? Intuitive Horse are offering limited spaces for 3 people to join them and their other ‘adopters’. Adopt a horse means you adopt one of their horses for a morning or afternoon a week and build a relationship with a horse, from the ground, on a regular basis whilst learning about horse behaviour and communication and receiving regular lessons. This gives you an opportunity to go on a journey with not only a horse, but yourself at the same time!

What can I do on my adopt a horse day?
At an agreed time you come down to see your horse. As the horses live out in the field 24/7 you have an opportunity to spend time with your horse in the field, together with the rest of the herd. This is a great way to observe and learn about horse behaviour as well as spend time bonding with your adopted horse. Surrounded by nature, it is a lovely way to spend time apart from the fast pace that life can demand from us.

You will have a session each week with Emma Ross, and a detailed discussion will take place before you start your adoption and before each session as to how you wish to progress.

The type of sessions you might have are an Intuitive Horse 1-1 session, focusing on your personal development, learning horse communication – natural horsemanship type work which incorporates personal development or being involved in your horse’s training programme, which includes therapies for horses. You can rotate between the different types of session (please note; riding is not offered as the approach is all about developing a relationship with the horse from the ground).

After your time with the horse you may like to stay on and get involved in farm life. You are very welcome to do this and to get involved in activities such as hay making in the summer and feeding horses extra feed in the winter months!

By adopting one of their horses you commit to an ongoing partnership between you and the horse through all the seasons of the year. You will be asked to pay the adoption fee at the beginning of each month, ideally by standing order. If for some reason you can’t make a week we roll that day over to another week so you don’t lose a day, and payment remains the same. Your payment helps towards looking after your horse!

There are two types of adoption on offer:

Option 1
Hour and a half session every week with Emma and your adopted horse
Hour and a half with the herd
Total time per week: 3 hours

This share is suited to people with some horse experience, or who have done some Intuitive Horse work before.
Cost £180 (equates to £45 a week)

Option 2
Three hour session every week, which is often broken down into two different sessions which includes time with the herd. Once more competent, herd time can be increased.
Total time per week: 3 hours

This share is available to anyone, in particular it would suit people with no horse experience as Emma stays with you the whole time. Progression to move to an Option 1 share is possible once a person has become competent around horses. This is discussed individually with Emma.

Cost £225 (equates to £56.25 a week)

Intuitive Horse is ‘by any other name’ Equine Assisted Personal Development. With a herd of fourteen horses, who live in a natural environment together at New Coghurst Farm near Hastings, East Sussex, Intuitive Horse work with people to help them in many different ways. One of the key benefits is that working with horses can help us quieten our minds and become more aware of our emotional, physical and mind state, thereby helping us become present to the moment.

Many people already enjoy this natural state, though for the rest of us we sense ourselves being consumed by our thoughts, leading to feelings of worry, anxiousness or just ‘feeling low’. We seem great at using our minds to create and achieve things, though if we continue to operate solely from that mind-state we can run the risk of finding it difficult to stop and just ‘be’ with ourselves comfortably. Often this fast pace world we live in dictates to us that there is never enough time, there is always something else to do or that we need to work harder to earn more money, for instance, and we tend to believe these statements to be true. They often give us our sense of identity. Thoughts may arise in us such as ‘there is no way I can slow down’ or ‘how will I pay the bills?’ and more importantly ‘if I slow down I might have to look at myself and become aware of how I’m truly feeling!’ Thoughts like that may leave us anxious that once the lid opens a flood will emerge, and it’s easier to control how we feel through keeping ourselves busy.

Horses can help us slow down and this natural process helps us feel calmer which, in turn, helps us reconnect with our true inner selves. Spending time at Intuitive Horse and either having a session with one horse, or by observing the herd, you will start to see that horses, and all nature for that matter, operate at a slower pace than what we’re accustomed to. When we allow ourselves to align with that natural pace, many of our perceived problems begin to drop away as we become clearer in ourselves, our thoughts and our decision making. Working with horses can also help with relationship problems, build self confidence and trust, allay fears, be congruent with ourselves, enhance emotional intelligence, and heal traumas.

You need not have any experience with horses to attend a session with Intuitive Horse. No riding is involved, and people who have fears around horses are welcomed. Intuitive Horse works with children and adults, and offers one-to-one sessions as well as workshops and retreats. Intuitive Horse is based at New Coghurst Farm near Hastings, East Sussex. It’s a family run farm; hay-making, sheep grazing and the Intuitive Horse work make up daily life at the farm. Intuitive Horse was developed as a result of years of experience working with horses and teaching people how to ride. It was observed that a horse’s behaviour would change from person to person and that the horse tended to respond directly to a persons’ emotional state, regardless of riding ability. For example, when a horse is ‘acting up’ and appears to be naughty it is more than likely responding to the feelings of its rider (or else expressing discomfort) and much like an infant who can’t speak it makes it’s behaviour louder to get our attention.

Having witnessed the positive impact horses can have on someone’s life, we sought to provide a stimulating learning experience and now offer a range of Intuitive Horse programmes including private one on one sessions, workshops and 3 & 5 day retreats. All work with the horses is done from the ground (no riding is involved) so absolutely no previous experience with horses is necessary.

Most of the horses living at Intuitive Horse initially came for some form of rehabilitation. This was often after all other avenues of care and treatment had been exhausted. However they got here, they are all doing well and now have a permanent residency at Intuitive Horse where they work with people on many different levels. None of our horses are overworked and all have a special programme which ensures their needs are met at all times.

Who might find Intuitive Horse beneficial?
Anyone! Male, female, adult or teenager, even family groups

Why might someone consider booking onto a retreat or 1-1 session? Perhaps they’re:
• Looking to experience something new
• Have a love of horses, nature and the outdoors
• Looking for something to help relax and unwind
• Interested in their personal development and wellbeing
• Interested in horses / have a horse and are interested to learn more about the horse / human relationship without riding
• Looking for some ‘ME’ time
• Have a specific issue they want to address

How can Intuitive Horse help?
• Helps people with fears of horses/animals
• Helps de-stress
• Aids personal reflection
• Helps you find answers to personal situations you may be feeling a little lost with
• Helps to quieten the mind
• Gives you tools to take away and use in everyday life that help towards managing self awareness of your behavioural and emotional states
• Provides an opportunity to relax and slow down from the fast pace of life
• Helps you gain confidence and self-esteem

Can Intuitive Horse help with conditions and disorders?
This work can be very helpful for people with specific conditions, and can support and complement therapies you might already be receiving. A consultation over the phone to gain an understanding of your situation first is essential. We have worked with people experiencing OCD, stress, depression, grief, anorexia/eating disorders, anxieties, schizophrenia, sexual abuse, people with low self-esteem, special needs and would be happy to work with anyone with conditions not already listed (please note, you do not have to be receiving any other form of therapy, though if you are seriously struggling with any of the above we have observed how beneficial it can be to work with us as well as receive therapy from another source – we are very happy to discuss this with you in confidence by phone).

How can horses and Pilates aid wellbeing? Intuitive Horse has teamed up with Abs-solute Pilates to create a one day workshop exploring how our emotional states can affect our physical state and vice versa, and how to work with our bodies and emotions with awareness.

What is Intuitive Horse? Equine Assisted Personal Develoment through experiential learning. We work with horses, from the ground, to explore our emotions and behaviours. Horses are great mirrors for reflecting back our internal states which, in turn, help us to become aware of both our obvious and subtle behaviours. By becoming aware of certain behaviours a person can decide whether the behaviour is favourable to continue with or whether it would be beneficial to explore different ways of being. As new ways are explored the horse responds, giving instant feedback, thereby helping the individual self-manage.

It’s well known that horses can provide a calming presence, helping people feel calmer in themselves. As horses do not judge us, this often provides a space for people to feel safe and start to relax when around the horses, which alone can help dissolve any tension being held in the body. Often we hold tension in our body for a number of reasons; injury, stress, emotional situations. If the tension isn’t released, after some time the body may start to become out of balance and result in physical discomfort. Pilates is very good at helping to release body tension through gentle exercises and stretches.

You don’t need to have had any experience with horses or Pilates to attend this workshop, and no riding is involved. If you’d like to learn more please visit intuitivehorse.co.uk and abs-solutebalance.co.uk or call Emma on 07825 036301

Intuitive Horse offers a unique experience for people who are interested in self-development and like horses. Our work is Equine Assisted Personal Development and we pay particular attention to providing an experience which involves ‘being’ and learning how to quieten the mind down. Intuitive Horse is not your normal riding establishment, in fact we don’t offer any riding, all the interaction with horses is done from the ground.

We have a herd of 13 horses who live outside all year round. When people come to work with our horses they either work with one horse or with the whole herd in their environment. By becoming aware of how horses communicate and function within a herd we start to learn the language of the felt sense, one that exists in us all though which we aren’t necessarily in touch with. As horses don’t have a vocal language to communicate they are sensing us all the time; this teaches us to come away from the mind and find a balance between the felt sense and mind. Horses can very quickly sense incongruences in us and this gets reflected back to us in a very honest and clear way, as horses do not have a hidden agenda or sit there and judge you – they simply respond!

We offer experiences with our horses both in a 1-1 form and with the whole herd. You may like to come for a one off session or book a course of sessions to work through. We also run 3 & 5 day retreats as well as 1 day workshops. No horse experience is necessary and we welcome people with fears around horses.

We offer vouchers in £10 and £20 denominations – a perfect gift for a loved one! To find out more please visit our website www.intuitivehorse.co.uk Alternatively call Emma on 07825 036301 or email info@ intuitivehorse.co.uk
