Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Over 2,700 people are newly diagnosed with this condition every year in Los Angeles. Also known as colorectal cancer, colon cancer develops in the large intestine or rectum. It often begins as benign polyps—small clumps of cells—that can grow and turn cancerous over time. While anyone can develop it, certain factors, like age, family history, and lifestyle, can increase your risk. We’ll talk about those risk factors and how to stay safe in due time.

The good news is that colon cancer is highly treatable when caught early. It’s all down to your ability to recognize the warning signs before it’s too late.

So, let’s discuss how to identify early signs and where to get help in Los Angeles.

Early Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

1. Blood in the Stool or Rectal Bleeding

Seeing blood in your stool can be alarming, but it’s a common symptom of colon cancer. The blood may appear bright red or dark, making the stool look tar-like. If this is the case, there’s a higher chance you’re suffering from this condition. Can you share a pivotal moment or experience that inspired you to start your journey in the health and wellbeing?

After undergoing a long and challenging treatment for cancer, I felt grateful to finally be in remission. To regain my health and muscle mass that I had lost during the treatment, and to reduce the risk of the cancer returning, I embarked on a better health and fitness journey. This journey taught me the importance of taking care of our bodies and minds not only during a health crisis but also as a lifelong commitment to ourselves. I strongly believe that staying active, eating well, and practising self-care can significantly improve one’s overall well-being and help prevent many health issues.

How do you prioritise your own wellbeing while running a business?

I use some great no-nonsense apps that send me daily reminders to read my affirmations, take those vitamin supplements, have 6-7 hours of sleep, and go for a run. These reminders help me stay focused on my health and wellness journey. To maintain a good work-life balance, I switch my phone to silent at 9 pm to avoid getting distracted by emails, texts, DMs, and WhatsApp messages. Spending quality time with my family and friends is a priority for me, and I take it much more seriously now.” Switching off my mobile or turning on silent mode enables me to be present when I’m with them.

Building a business can be challenging. What role has your personal wellness played in overcoming obstacles?

Prioritising self-care is crucial for me to combat stress, anxiety, and brain fog, especially as a cancer survivor. This approach has helped me to boost my energy, improve my focus, increase clarity, and enhance my emotional intelligence. As a result, I’m better equipped to manage daily tasks and handle the stress of running a business.

How has your own health and wellbeing philosophy influenced the services you offer in your business?

As a business owner, I have come to realise that investing in the well-being of my team is crucial for achieving positive outcomes. By ensuring that they’re happy and healthy, I have seen better engagement, lower rates of sickness absence, higher performance, and productivity. Additionally, when they’re more content and satisfied, they have less conflicts with colleagues and are more effective at work.

Can you share a specific self-care practice that has had a significant impact on your overall wellbeing

Yesterday, I checked my Garmin and saw that I had run 126.2 km between March 21st and April 17th, averaging 4.5 km per day. Since I decided to include running as part of my self-care routine, I have noticed a significant improvement in my mental health, conflict resolution skills, self-confidence, and stress management abilities. This has also helped me in my business as I now have a more positive and proactive attitude, increased patience with demanding clients and better mental clarity and focus.

How do you stay updated on the latest trends and ensure your business aligns with current wellness practices?

I do this by being very proactive when it comes to health and wellness. I search for thought leaders, authors, and content creators in this field, and follow their podcasts, interviews, and social media accounts. Some of these gurus include Charlotte Gerson, Morton Walker, Dr. Jason Fung, Mo Gawdat and Lalah Delia.

Have there been moments where you had to make choices that challenged your personal values for the sake of business growth?

As I strive to grow my business, I, like many entrepreneurs, hold certain core values in high regard, such as integrity, accountability, diligence and discipline. However, I understand that these values may be tested or challenged at times. In such situations, I hope to remain open-minded and consider different perspectives, seek advice and support if necessary, and be resilient in order to ensure that my business continues to thrive.

Looking back at your journey, is there a particular mistake or setback that taught you valuable lessons about the importance of wellbeing?

During the year I underwent chemotherapy, my mental health was negatively impacted. The inability to engage in any physical activity, loss of appetite, and increasing isolation due to COVID-19 restrictions made things worse. In hindsight, I now realise the extent to which my mental and emotional health suffered during those 12 months. This experience taught me that ‘wellbeing’ is one’s physical, mental, emotional, and social health combined and should be looked at more holistically. It is complex, critical and absolutely pivotal to the quality of your life.

As you plan for the future of your business, do you have any projects you are currently working on?

I’m extremely grateful for the opportunities that I have been presented with, as well as the ones that I have personally created. I’m looking forward to finishing my book, engaging in more speaking engagements, collaborating with aspiring female-owned brands, assisting them in their marketing efforts and working closely with cancer charities like Sarcoma UK to bring attention to cancer research and early detection.

What legacy do you hope to leave through your business?

In today’s fast-paced digital world, it goes without saying that companies need to market their products and services effectively to stay ahead. That’s where my business comes in. I have a small team of dedicated people who work hard to provide data and insights to help companies make informed decisions. Our aim is to empower businesses with knowledge so they succeed in the marketplace. I believe in creating a healthy and positive work culture that encourages the team to give their very best. I hope that my legacy will be one of honesty, kindness, integrity and strength.

Likewise, research and innovative treatment options also improve the chances for patients. But life on the other side can be as challenging as fighting the disease. As a survivor, you cannot expect the road back to be easy. But you have a lot to be grateful for, which is a good reason to invest the effort. Here are some tips to reclaim your life as a breast cancer survivor. 

Embrace a positive mindset

The battle for cancer survivors is often long and painful, but it only makes them stronger. Embracing a positive mindset can help you cruise through the treatment and regain control thereafter. The first diagnosis is perhaps the worst thing you may experience in your lifetime. But finding your strength there and then can help you find your way back. Remember that you are more likely to beat the disease if you believe you can. Meditation, self-care, and therapy put you on the right track. 

Be informed 

Being informed also puts you in a better place as a cancer survivor. The disease may relapse at any time, so awareness keeps you ahead of the symptoms. Acting fast can save your life even if cancer comes back. Know your current condition, treatment success rates, and possibilities of relapse. Also, stay proactive with self-checks and regular appointments to address concerns sooner than later.

Spread awareness

While being aware makes a difference, spreading awareness is even better. Consider joining breast cancer support groups, both local and online. Sharing your journey with patients and survivors can inspire them to be the strongest while battling the condition. You can go the extra mile by volunteering for breast cancer research studies and clinical trials. Consider it a way to give back to future generations by being a part of an initiative to beat the disease. Moreover, getting access to novel procedures, treatments, or interventions gives you a better chance of survival. 

Accept help

Living with breast cancer is taxing, and even survivors deal with pain, stress, and depression. But accepting help enables you to deal with your woes better. Share your feelings with your loved ones, friends, or fellow patients. Venting them out can relieve your stress and fear. Moreover, you can seek physical help with your daily chores as you may feel weak and tired. Likewise, do not hesitate to ask for financial aid. 

Avoid blaming yourself

Breast cancer is not a preventable disease, but early detection can make it treatable. Avoid blaming yourself because family history, environmental factors, and stress increase the overall risks. You cannot do much about relapse because there are no proven prevention strategies. Be vigilant about screening because failing to address a problem early can be your fault in the long run.

I didn’t expect to be diagnosed with terminal breast cancer at 47. Whilst I knew there was a small possibility, I didn’t really expect my cancer would return along with an incurable diagnosis. But here we are. 

If we know anything, it’s that life often throws us curve balls, this one being the biggest, shittiest one you could ever imagine. It’s unimaginable and something I still struggle to believe, even though I know it’s very real. As I walked out the hospital I remember telling myself and those I loved that I would beat this, that if anyone can I would. That I would defy the odds and live and thrive with this for a long time. This became my mantra and one I still tell myself most days. 

As hard as it is to imagine, life goes on. Living with cancer is far from easy, but this diagnosis has driven me to try and live more vividly and fully than I had before. I may be terminal but right now I’m well and not ready to go anywhere. 

It takes an army to live your best life when faced with a cancer diagnosis. Here’s some of the things I have used to thrive: 

Choose life 

I got busy living. Embracing life, enjoying the little things. I love my adventures and intend to live big. I love the water and the freedom it gives me. I can be found kayaking, paddling or swimming. These are some of the things that bring joy to my life. 

Belief 

The work is never ending. I believe I can do anything I set my mind to. It applies more now than ever before. Facing my fears, choosing my beliefs and letting go of those that don’t serve me. All of this work is central to my determination and belief that I can thrive with stage 4 cancer. 

Be informed 

Doing my own research, reading books. I spent a lot of time trying to make sense of my cancer, and taking control based on what worked for me. 

Be my best advocate

I have had to trust myself and the decisions I make. To take charge. It’s documented that patients who direct their own treatment fare better than those that don’t. 

A strong reason for living

Focusing on all the reasons I want to keep living, rather than the fear of dying. Looking forward. To the experiences and adventures I’m yet to have. My husband. My family. My friends. My business. Early on, I was so terrified, I couldn’t imagine life six months out. Eventually once the dust settles I just started focusing on living instead. 

Avoid statistics 

They are indicators not inevitabilities. There are exceptions to every rule. All we can do is walk our own journey, and be grateful and determined to defy the odds.

Understand my disease

I spent a long time reading and researching different protocols so I kew my options. I have tried to understand what my body is trying to tell me. How to nourish myself, to appreciate, to let go. I try and take it as an opportunity to change the way I treat my body and the environment around me. 

Focus on healing 

I have also learnt that maybe this journey isn’t about finding a cure. A magic bullet . It’s about healing. The type of healing that never stops. Everything I do is about trying to heal my mind and body. There are so many options. The important thing is to trust the decisions you make and believe in yourself. My life has taken on a new normal, and whilst it doesn’t fit my old view of what my life would look like, it brings different joys and appreciations every day. 

I’m only a year into my stage 4 diagnosis. As you can imagine, it’s been A LOT. It’s a process of continuous learning, about myself, my disease, my healing. My focus is on filling my life with love and adventures and creating something amazing as a legacy. Everyone’s cancer journey is unique. This is mine so far.

Accumulated waste in the body has been found to be a reason for colorectal cancer. Besides, several studies reveal that a fiber-rich diet helps reduce the risk of 12 other types of cancers.

Soy Products Reduces Risk Of Breast Cancer

A research paper published in Shanghai revealed that women who consumed 11 grams of soy protein every day faced reduced mortality. The research also concluded that the women consuming soy protein faced a 30% less risk of recurring breast cancer. According to the experts at Myvillagegreen.com, the US population also revealed similar findings; higher soy protein consumption results in reduced mortality. Soy products contain a compound called isoflavone which is also used in controlling breast cancer in women.

WHO Classifies Deli Meat As Carcinogenic

Debates have been going on long around processed meat for its carcinogenic effects. Processed meat products like sausages, bacon, deli meat, are a leading source of colorectal cancer, according to WHO. A 50-gram serving of processed meat can increase the risk of cancer by 21%. And a 120 gram of red meat serving can further increase the risks by another 7%. WHO suggests consuming fresh meat, and that too without grilling it on live fire. Grilling could release several other carcinogens from meat.

NCI Report Links Dairy Products To Cancer

Yes, the staple energy source for almost all living beings can also lead to cancer. But, not all dairy products have been found to increase the risk of cancer. According to reports, high-fat dairy products can increase the risk of breast cancer in women. Even consumption in small quantities can increase the risk by almost 50% in women. Moreover, regular dairy products have also been associated with prostate cancer in men. Studies from the World Cancer Research Fund reveal that 1/4 to 1/3 cup of cow’s milk can increase the risk for breast cancer by about 30% if consumed daily.

After that, the doctor would decide the right type of dosage and radiation. You may get radiation therapy before surgery to reduce the growing tumour size or after surgery to remove the remaining cancer cells present in your body.

Side Effects

The type of treatment you receive, the location of your cancer, and your health determine the side effects of radiotherapy. Radiation can damage the healthy cells along with the cancerous cells. Side effects can be short-term and long-term and may include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, diarrhoea, etc.

Long-term side effects can include heart or lung problems, thyroid problems, hormonal changes, etc. Internal beam radiation might give you some soreness or tenderness, or you may experience fatigue.

FDA and other agencies are still researching Zantac. However, you are at high risk of developing Zantac cancer after being exposed to high doses of Ranitidine and for longer periods. It would be best if you stopped using the drug immediately then seek medical and legal help.

I believe this may be a bit controversial to throw out there but this theme bothers me a lot and I really want to share my thoughts in the hope that they may help someone with a diagnosis.

I am a health coach and a trained holistic cancer coach. Every day I support women with breast cancer to recover. No, this does not mean all alternative …no chemo etc. It means finding an all-around approach to recovery that can include chemo, radiation or whatever the person chooses. But it also means nutrition, detoxification, emotional wellbeing, hormonal health, stress management, purposeful living and exercise. This is all the stuff oncologists are not trained to advise on and do not have the time for.

And this is what I come across all the time:
The war on cancer, to be a cancer warrior, fighting cancer….it just sounds so wrong to me.

We hear it everywhere and most of all from the big cancer charities who fundraise for cancer research etc.

I do understand, I really do because I have been there myself. You get the big C diagnosis and you just want this to pass. You want to get rid of this cancer, it feels like an enemy. An enemy to your body and soul and an enemy to the life as you have known it, the life that you want to return to as soon as you can. You just want to get rid of that enemy-tumour and carry on with life and of course in this situation it appears the easiest to fight. To go into full on battle and get this over and done with.

What does an enemy do though when you fight? The enemy will probably fight you back even harder. Well, at least this is a strong possibility.
So…. what am I saying? That you should ask your cancer to be your friend? May be that goes a bit far as you don’t want to get too comfortable with the presence of cancer in your body and this thinking would not make you take the steps you need to take to heal from cancer. You do not want to get complacent.

Consider the option that cancer is here to challenge you, in a way a language to communicate with you, a symptom to let you know that things are not right.

Obviously, you may say you are not well if you have cancer but I would like to argue that it is not cancer that is the issue but the underlying cause of the cancer. Cancer is the symptom, the language to communicate with you.

How about then, imagining cancer as your teacher…this teacher has come into your life to wake you up and to make changes. Would this not bring about the greatest chance for healing and recovery?

If you think about it..unless you change, nothing will change and how can we work on changes in ourselves in lifestyle, thought patterns, nutrition and so on if we are engaged in a furious battle.

I would like to argue that we need to listen carefully to what cancer has to tell us, is here to teach us and this may be in many different areas in life. This could be to do with nutrition, overcoming grief, anger, resentment, trauma and also how we feel about our life’s path.

Mostly there are aspects of all these areas. Cancer is never just one thing but whatever it is, the more carefully we work with ourselves to heal and recover the more we will learn about ourselves and the cancer that has come to reside.

With this in mind we can choose conventional and complimentary treatment options wisely to heal rather than to engage in a short battle and then withdraw to wait for the next war.

I really do not mean to be offensive in any way, I respect and know from own experience that there is always an element of battle for example the battle with your own fear and emotions and sometimes cancer has become so strong in us, has grown so much that it is threatening us severely. I do not put down this difficult situation at all.

However, considering cancer as a teacher could make us much more able to respond wisely to our health crisis. To adopt response-ability rather than lashing out from a place of fear and terror.

I know, more easily said than done but I hope I was able to encourage those of you with a diagnosis at the very least to dare think in a new way.

Personally I would love to banish the words warrior, war on cancer etc from our cancer vocabulary

Vaginal dryness can have many causes. One of these causes can be breast cancer. Why does vaginal dryness occur?
