Cycling in Orlando may not be as popular as in some other cities, but the number of cycling deaths is still too high.

The beach looked clean, though a closer investigation revealed amongst other things, small pieces of plastic, and strings and wires hidden in the tide line – 30kg was the amount of ocean litter collected in one and a half hours by the ‘grabbers’ on the beach in one day! 

Every first Sunday of the month volunteers get together on one of our 3 local beaches. During a 90-minute window, they invite members of the public to look for anything that doesn’t belong to the natural marine environment and collect these ‘foreign’ items in a bucket, which are then checked by the GRAB team, weighed, and disposed of appropriately.

At G.R.A.B = Gather Rubbish And Bin it, volunteers educate people on how much litter there is in our oceans, how it affects marine life and encourage both local and wider communities to be mindful of our use of plastic as well as the famous RRR (reuse, reduce, recycle).

The first time I attended this monthly event I thought I would be looking for larger more obvious items of litter but to my surprise, my bucket was full of quite tiny things. 

Top 10 Marine Litter Items

Did you know that the Top 10 marine litter items found by the 14,527 volunteers of the Marine Conservation Society are:

1. Plastic/polystyrene pieces (0-50cm)6. Caps & lids
2. Glass7. Cotton bud sticks
3. Cigarette stubs8. Fishing net (small)
4. Packets (crisp, sweet, lolly, sandwich)9. Fishing line
5. String/cord (thickness 0-1cm)10. Plastic/polystyrene (other)

As I was enjoying my exploration of the beach lifting dry seaweed, I realised I had with me a plastic water bottle for refreshment having forgotten to take one of my many reusable containers at home 🙄 The joy of being human!!

My Dare to You This Summer

Grab a friend, and a hat, and come and join a team on the beach. Buckets, gloves, and litter pickers are all provided. 

Some of the benefits you will get could include:

  • Enjoying time outdoors
  • A mindful experience, focusing on finding some ‘treasures’
  • Meeting new people or enjoying a moment to yourself
  • Surprising discoveries
  • Education, you may learn a new thing or two
  • Feeling part of something bigger while having fun

And the cherry on the cake: volunteering has been shown to not only contribute to a good cause it also improves volunteers’ wellbeing! (Take a look at last month’s article on the topic Cheers for Volunteers)

GRAB events take place the 1st Sunday of the month 11 am – 12.30 pm rotating between 3 beaches (you will easily spot the Deans Volunteers’ station and flag.)

July 7th SALTDEAN

September 1st ROTTINGDEAN 

October 6th SALTDEAN 

etc … all year around

The 40th anniversary of Volunteers’ Week in the UK runs between 3rd and 9th June, and represents the perfect opportunity to celebrate the amazing contributions volunteers make around the Deans and the Havens!

I am blown away by the community spirit I have found here. Day after day I meet people volunteering locally, regularly or ad hoc. In person or online, at school, in the office, in a place of worship, a sports club, carehome, on the beach, in a communal garden and at the other end of the phone, the list goes on!

In addition to volunteering through groups, clubs, and organisations, I’ve discovered that more than half the UK’s population is involved in informal volunteering within their communities. It is often not visible, and chances are you have been doing it yourself, in one way or another; feeding the neighbour’s cat, helping a student with professional experience in your business, weeding around the local tennis courts, picking up a prescription for a neighbour or watering a garden which is not yours.

I like to say that you can’t give a hug without receiving one too. … well volunteering has the same mutually beneficial effect. 

Research shows that volunteering has a powerful impact on our health, purpose and engagement. It:

  • Improves our mood, boosts motivation, and positive emotions and reduces stress
  • Ignites growth, learning new skills, stretching our comfort zone, and stimulating our brains
  • Increases physical activity, keeping us active
  • Offers social interactions and connections, which can generate long-lasting friendships. It is a natural networking opportunity too
  • Strengthens community ties, by having a direct impact on others’ lives, it can also create a sense of belonging 
  • Creates purpose in life, it is an excuse to use your unique skills, find meaning and clarify your sense of direction

A few years ago I joined “A Touch of Gentleness”, a local, not-for-profit community of people committed to bringing ‘connection, touch, and gentleness’ back to society. Many hand massages later I am now training volunteers myself, and I would like to give a big shout-out to the Plough Inn in Rottingdean, East Sussex, who are huge supporters of local community initiatives and are hosting our monthly training.

Do you have:

  • A desire to help and inspire others, use your skills and meet new people with a common interest?
  • A cause that matters to you?
  • Spare time?

Then perhaps volunteering is for you.

Here are some ideas and local initiatives to get you started:

  • Picking up litter on the beach in Saltdean, Ovingdean and Rottingdean with GRAB
  • Giving a hand at the Saltdean Tennis Club (much work is done behind the scenes)
  • Helping at the community supermarkets and the Havens food collection
  • Watering a tree on the Saltdean Oval or in the Peacehaven Orchard 
  • Mentoring a young woman or young carer with Flourish Mentors
  • Welcoming visitors to the Lido
  • Marshalling at the Park Run in Peacehaven
  • Offering free hand massages in carehomes, hospices and local events with A Touch of Gentleness

If you are short of time, you can donate to a volunteer organisation of your choice so they can keep training their volunteers and supporting the initiatives they work for.

Volunteering is time well spent and has the power to transform us, which ripples into the communities for the better. I can’t imagine a better time to become involved in a more mindful and deliberate way.

When was the last time you checked the battery level in your mobile phone? I am pretty sure you keep a close eye on your phone and when the battery is running low, you actively look for an outlet to recharge it.

Before reading further, I invite you to pause for a moment:

  • Take a deep breath, and briefly check your own personal battery
  • If you had an indicator of how charged your body-battery was, between 1-100% what would it display right now? 
  • Don’t over-think it, just make a mental note of the number that comes up
  • This is how you are feeling energy-wise right here, right now

We might be educated on the best way to take care of our phone, but how much attention do we give to our body and our own energy levels?

Are you aware of what depletes your body-battery?

When is your next inner-battery charging point? Is it tonight, this weekend, your next holiday perhaps?

What can you do to top up your energy throughout the day to a level that allows you to ‘function’ until you reach your next full charge? 

Our internal battery running low has all sort of effects on our physical, emotional, mental and energy levels which in turn drives our behaviour and how we deal with life’s everyday challenges.

When our levels are low, we are likely to experience tiredness, hyper-activity, anxiety or confusion. We might struggle with simple problem-solving and decision making processes. As patience is wearing thin, communication can get messy, impacting our relationships in the process.

As the new year begins, I invite you to bring a little bit more pause-itivity, self-care, and gentleness in your life and regularly take note of your inner battery level:

  • Pause and briefly pay attention to your body
  • Evaluate your battery level: 1 to 100%
  • Take one action that will increase that number if needed
  • Do this in the morning before stepping out of bed, after a long meeting, during a walk, while brushing your teeth, even when you reach out to recharge your phone

What action can you take in a few minutes to recharge your body battery?

Wishing you to bring to the new year what you would like the new year to bring to you, and that you dare to be the change you want to see in your family, community and life!
