 Lucerne Dialogue 2024: An Overview

1. The Lucerne Dialogue 2024 event was a remarkable gathering of minds. In the beautiful surroundings of Merlischachen, near Lucerne, over 45 young leaders congregated from over 20 European countries. Their purpose? To tackle a significant European challenge: How can companies effectively strengthen democracies?

2. The annual event, known as Basecamp, showcased Europe’s brightest minds. It became a platform for sharing revolutionary ideas and fostering synergies across borders.

3. Domagoj Boljar was among these young leaders. Invited for his groundbreaking efforts in leading Croatia’s first B Corp, his insights were invaluable.

4. At Basecamp, participants engaged in robust discussions, shared unique experiences, and brainstormed innovative solutions. It was a melting pot of creativity and knowledge.

5. The event culminated in a thrilling pitching session, where leaders presented their ideas. An unexpected twist saw Boljar tasked with pitching for one of the teams, an experience he described as “one of the most exciting things I have ever done.”

The Krnek family from Zagreb understands this simplicity better than most. For Mato and his wife, Marica, running is not just a hobby; it is an integral part of their lives. Almost every weekend, the Krneks participate in half marathons or trail races, eager for any event that pushes their limits. Their passion for movement and exploration reflects a lifelong commitment to sports, a shared love that has defined their family’s lifestyle.

This seamless routine faced an unexpected disruption when Mato was diagnosed with a severe foot infection. The infection was so severe that it nearly cost him his foot, a possibility that loomed large as he endured months of medical treatment and recovery. His doctors recommended he switch to footwear made from natural materials to prevent further complications.

Denis, Mato’s son, recalls watching a television segment on MIRET bio-based sneakers, now Earthbound, which are crafted from sustainable materials. Seeing an opportunity to help his father, Denis ordered a pair without hesitation. These sneakers, designed with the environment in mind, quickly became a game-changer for Mato, allowing him to return to his beloved pastime.

The true test of MIRET—Earthbound sneakers’ efficacy came during the Starigrad to Veliko Rujno trail race, a grueling 14-kilometer uphill challenge in intense 38-degree Celsius heat. Reflecting on the race, Mato shares, “Even though these aren’t traditional running shoes, they proved remarkably durable. They believe in using business as a force for good. A force that creates positive change. They meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. B Corps are the embodiment of responsible business.

Yet, how did we come about to these entities of change? What was the inception point of this transformative movement in the business world? Let’s delve into their history.

History of B Corps

1. The idea of B Corps was born out of a realisation that traditional corporations were not addressing societal and environmental needs. This realisation led to the creation of the first B Corps in 2007 by three friends, Jay Coen Gilbert, Bart Houlahan, and Andrew Kassoy.

2. Their vision was to redefine success in business. They aimed for companies to not just be best in the world, but best for the world.

3. B Labs, a non-profit, was established to provide the standards and certification for B Corps. This opened up a path for businesses to legally bind themselves to their purpose, not just profit.

How to Become a B Corp

It’s not easy. But it’s worth it. To become a B Corp, companies must meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance. They must complete the B Impact Assessment, a comprehensive evaluation of a company’s impact on its workers, customers, community, and the environment.

But that’s not all. They must also amend their legal governing documents to consider the impact of their decisions on all stakeholders, not just shareholders.

And guess what? The journey doesn’t stop there. They must also undergo a review process every three years to maintain their B Corp certification.

Just like any other company, B Corps face challenges. The task of meeting high standards of accountability and transparency is daunting. It requires a lot of effort and resources. Not all companies are up for it.

Another challenge is the cost. The certification fee can be a significant burden, particularly for small businesses. Some companies may find it difficult to justify the cost, especially when they are already struggling to make ends meet.

The third challenge is the lack of awareness. Many people are still unfamiliar with the concept of B Corps. This can make it difficult for B Corps to explain their mission and values to investors, employees, and customers.

However, despite these challenges, the number of B Corps continues to grow. It’s a testament to the resilience and commitment of these purpose-driven businesses.

B Corps are not your traditional businesses. They believe in the triple bottom line – people, planet, and profit. They consider the interests of all stakeholders, not just shareholders. This approach is in stark contrast to traditional businesses that focus solely on making profit.

It’s not that B Corps don’t care about profit. They do. But they also care about the impact of their business on society and the environment. They believe in creating shared value – a value that benefits all, not just a select few.

Growing up in Durban, a grand city resting on the coast of South Africa, Shaun was not a quintessential city boy. His love for the wild was apparent from a young age, a trait he inherited from his parents. Family trips to the vast open landscapes of Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia nurtured a heart full of curiosity and a longing for the African wild. The safari trips were more than just familial bonding. They were a call. A call that Shaun answered, leading him to a path of wildlife conservation and safari guiding.

    Early Life and Inspiration for Safari Adventures

    Shaun’s inspiration for safari adventures is deeply rooted in his childhood. 

     The trips to various countries in Africa, be it the arid landscapes of Namibia, the diverse wildlife of Botswana, the majestic Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, or the lush greenery of Zambia, all left a lasting impression on him.

    The excitement of packing into the family’s 4×4 and driving across countries for a whopping 36 hours was an unmatched thrill for young Shaun.

     The final family trip before he finished school was a turning point, a moment of clarity when he realised his love for safaris and meeting different people from around the world.

    His decision to follow a career as a safari guide was a testament to his love for the African bush and its mesmerising wildlife.

     Guiding for two years, his travel didn’t limit to Africa. His thirst for exploration took him as far as Asia, North and South America, and Europe. Shaun, a wanderer at heart, embarked on a massive Africa trip in 2002, traversing over 22,000 km through some of Africa’s most pristine wildlife areas.

It’s like asking a parent who their favourite child is. Each itinerary he creates carries a bit of him, something he’d love to experience, a place he’d want to explore.

    Shaun’s favourite destinations are as varied and dynamic as the man himself. 

     Botswana stands out due to its low-impact tourism model. The vast wilderness and the exclusive safari experience it offers are second to none.

    Zimbabwe, with its professional guides and rich culture, never fails to amaze him.

     The thrilling walking safaris in Zambia are a unique experience that he cherishes.

     The unrivaled uniqueness of Madagascar, the migration in Tanzania and Kenya, and the soul-stirring experience of looking into a gorilla’s eyes in Uganda and Rwanda – are all experiences Shaun swears by. 

    Passion for Conservation and Community Involvement

In his own words, “Stanley Safaris is the best because I am lucky enough to travel with my parents as a child.
